Hello Im Nicky
Hello folks. My name is Nicky and I live in Rochester NY. My surgery is scheduled on July 2. I am somewhat nervous but mostly excited. I was hoping to get some advice from others who have had the RNY as to what I should know or be prepared for in the hospital snd when I first get home. It will be greatly appreciated.
Hi Nicky. Welcome.
I haven't had the RNY but have you been to the surgery specific board? There are a lot of RNYers there who could probably help you out. Also, the chat is for live 24/7 chatting and a lot of gastric bypassers are there usually.
Best of luck.

Hi Nicky,
Wishing you a uneventful surgery! Remember the 2 W's and you will be fine.....Water and Walking...they both seem to be the cure for everything the first few weeks. Also, don't forget to pack 2 chap sticks..your lips will get dry very easily after surgery and when you drop the first one and nobody is around to help you pick it up, you'll need your other one! lol
Best of luck to you Nicky!

Hi Nicky! This may be too much info .. but all suggestions that I got from my support group that was a life saver.
Best suggestion I can come up with for you is pack light! You don't need much, what you do need the hosptial can probably get you.
I wore the same clothes in and out, soft and loose.
I didn't bring my own jammies. The stuff that comes out the drains may not come out of your clothes. The drains have a bulb container attached that catches the stuff, but they can leak.
Bring a pillow. Hospital ones are usually tiny and crappy to sleep on. And you want it for the ride home, brace those sore spots on the bumps.
If you don't want visitors -- tell them now. Getting them to leave is really hard once they get in.
Pain is really bad day after. Take your pain meds. You won't get addicted.
Practice squatting now. Try to use legs only for sitting down and standing up. Your belly will hurt when you do these things. And the grab bars in the toilet are there for that reason. Grab em and pull!
As for home -- if somone offes to help -- let them spoil you rotten!
A recliner may be good for the first few nights. If you managed to sleep flat in the hosptial then you're good to go for your own bed, if not the recliner.
And remember the best piece of info of all -- EVERYDAY IS 100% BETTER THAN THE ONE BEFORE!
Good luck to you. If you need something more specific answered. Please ask.

Hi Nicky and welcome!! I can't give you much better advice than most who have already posted here except to try and relax and things will go just fine I am sure. I had open RNY and my surgery went well, thankfully no compilcations as I am sure your will also. Most are done the lap way now and I understand the recoup period is a bit easier? than with open. WHichever way, walk after, but also get lots of rest. The chapsticks are a godsend in the hospital. As is the advice to bring your own pillow!! (The hospital ones stink!!)(Guess they don't want us getting too comfortable!! LOL! Please keep us posted on your progress and again welcome - feel free to ask any kind of question, nothing is adumb question, believe me cuz I've asked them all!! Take good care, Mary
