What do you eat at a Deli?

Forgive me for barging into the NY board.  I'm originally from Long Island 8)

Anyway, my mother mentioned that she really has a craving for deli.  We have "A" place here in Atlanta that is the closest to NY/Jewish deli we can get and that's where she wants to go.  Being only 3 1/2 weeks out, I REALLY can't eat there yet, but promised her we'd go in 2-3 weeks.

So, what do you order from a NY/Jewish deli?  I was looking at the menu online...they have salad platters (it's a bed of lettuce, tomato, and onion...not an actual salad) with tuna, chicken, whitefish salad, or salmon salad.  Those seem like the closest things up my alley to eat, but still seem like they would be high in fat due to the mayo?  Maybe if I could get smoked salmon, not salmon salad?

Not sure, what do you ladies and gents suggest?

Thanks for any input!
Elli

Hi Elli,

Honestly I wouldn't suggest even going to that type of place for a while.  They say salmon is very oily (naturally) and that it would be tuff for you.  Also, anything made w/ full fat Mayo, pretty much out of the question for a LONG time.  You might be able to have just straight turkey but that is about it.  I am Jewish girl from LI and I still don't typically go to that style deli b/c it's a tuff place to find food even being 4 years out.  If they had stuffed cabbage you might be ok w/ that, but the sauce that goes over it is usually sweetened w/ brown sugar.  Sorry to be so negative, but its all true.

GOOD LUCK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thank you for the advice.  I guess worst case senerio, I could get an egg.  They do have some breakfast stuff like eggs.  I could do that for sure.

I guess my biggest thing right now is that my mom is a prisoner in my house.  She's disabled and lives with me.  Because of the surgeon's weight lifting limitations, I can't lift her wheelchair (which is about 40 pounds) into the car.  So, I sort of feel bad.  And because of my eating limitations, I can't take her out to eat (we usually go once a week, if for no other reason so she can get out of the house).  It just seems like she has a simple request and I'd like to honor it sometime soon.  I just have to figure out what to eat BEFORE we go.  I could get chicken soup and just eat the broth.  This particular restaurant is one she can easily walk into, since I can't bring the wheelchair.

Again, thanks for the advice!

I wouldn't feel compelled to eat anything, I'd bring a bottle of water with me to sip and socialize or a protein shake at the most to mix up there...eat first then go with your mom..the greatest lesson I learned long ago for me was to use food as fuel and eating out as socialization only, when I didnt seperate the 2 that was what led me to morbid obesity, this is a great opportunity perhaps to challenge old beleifs that you have to eat when others are out! Bring a cheese stick or hard boiled egg with you and eat with her.....so many choices.........

I'd recommend calling and seeing if they have any type of low fat or no fat tuna salad. Some delis carry that stuff.

As for what I order? I normally order a tuna salad sandwich on Rye with extra mayo, a side of potato salad, and a large diet coke...and don't forget an extra sour pickle. Sometimes I'll get pastrami or something like that but I've never been a fan for that type of food.

Good idea.  I'll ask the next time I run in there.  I buy bagels there occasionally, and mom has been in a bagel mood lately.  I already asked if they had the nutritional information and that was a no-go.

Thanks!

A bagel would be a carb on a plate with no protein value.  Maybe that's why?  I don't eat them, I'm not allowed to have any bread yet.  They are for my mom.
