My Slipped Band Is Coming Out...
Why the VSG?
First a little bit of history.
I had a feeling my band slipped a while ago, but it was only after taking a new job in the ED and the constant running and lifting/twisting/ pulling and pushing that I really started to have pain and was unable to eat. I could feel my esoph. being pulled to the right and sometimes wasn't even able to swallow water without choking. Once I started blacking out in patients' rooms decided to have blood work done. I was anemic 30/10. I wasn't really eating and was doing poorly on my orientation in the ED. I was asked to leave, and they weren't holding my job for me.
Dr. Singh did my revision on Monday, Aug. 11th. He was able to fix the hiatal hernia with only a couple of stitches and repostion the same band lower on the stomach. It Should still allow for weight loss. He claimed only 4% of the bands are slipping, but contributory to the slippage is hard physical labor (I did read recently that the average RN/LPN/Tech on the floor lifts in a single shift about 1 ton of weight.) I would not be allowed to lift anything heavy for at least 6 weeks, and even after that there is no guarentee that it will not slip again.
The VSG seemed to be a better option for me if I want to stay working and not worry about the band slipping. Unfortuntely, most insurance co. consider it experimental for weight loss and will not approve it. For me now it is a mute point, because Singh just repositioned my band. With the amount of pain I am in now (much more than the first time) I really don't want to go through another surgery.
The VSG in a way offers the best of both worlds. I was quite afraid of gaining weight again (my BMI is 30 now) without any external 'reminders' of portion control. But I still have my band and am looking forward to continued weight loss, I just need to find another job!
