I have heard so many pre-op testing horror stories that i just have to ask.  Is it tru they take blood from and artery, cuz i heard that really is dangerous and hurts.  Also, I am getting surgery at Good Sam in West Islip....can someone who did their pre-testing their help me out?  I like knowing everything before I do it or else I get a very nauseous feeling.  Thank you.

I did not have surgery there but had suregery in Western NY and no they did not take blood from my artery (That is called a blood gas) and it is not dangerous but is uncomfortable. I had an EKG, Chest xray and blood work. Very simple and nothing to worry over. Good luck! Hugs, Chris

I'm out in WNY too...and all i had was a chest x-ray, an ekg, and lots of blood work. Nothing to painful.......and took very little time. WHy don' t you call the place that is doing your pre op testing....I'm sure they can tell you what they do.   Its probably pretty standard.

Lili going to PST is NOTHING!!! When you get there, after checking in, 1st they do a chest x-ray, then some blood work, EKG, then the height and weight, then the nurse comes in and asks you a TON of questions, and last but not least the PA gives you a "quickie" going over (b/p, pulse rate, listening to your heart and lungs) NO ABG's are drawn at all So relax, but be prepared to be there at least 2 hrs!

Any other questions feel free to PM after all....guess where I work

Stop your worrying...you'll do just fine. The only pain I had was waiting so long to be called in for the testing! Good Luck.

My surgery is scheduled for 1/10 and my pre-op is 1/4 -  I have to say I am shocked with how many doctors appointments I need to go to before the surgery.  I was told by the surgeon to go to the psch eval, nutritionist,Endocrine Dr, the Pulmonary Dr, the cardiologist and then my primary well that turned into the endocrine sending me to bloodwork, the pulmary Dr sending me for a PFT, The cardiologist requires 2 more appointments and my PCP wants a full physical then another appointment for the clearance-6 appointments turned into 11 plus the three pre-op appointments to my surgeon and my pre-op-Thats 14 appointments and I have no known health issues.  Geez That alot of time and money-It's been pretty tough getting to all those and working.  I really want this all behind me.

hi lili, as part of the pulmonary function test you DO get an aretrial blood gas.  it is NOT dangerous at all... it tests the level of carbon dioxide and oxygen in your blood.  it is taken fron your radial vein, inside of your wrist.  i wont lie, it did hurt more than a regular blood draw... but if your getting the pft, you will get this too.  i had an ekg, ultrasound, upper gi, pft, chest xray, tons of blood work, and an endoscopy.  dont worry...you will do fine, and this is not at all a dangerous procedure.  good luck!!!
