i hear alot about hernia repair during WLS

I ve been reading alot of experiences and im noticing many people have hernia repair while they are undergoing WLS. My question is can't the gastro dr's  see the hernias when they do the endoscopies prior to surgery?? You would think it wouldn't be a surprise with all pre op testing.? Just wondering  By the way i was approved yesterday . Will get a date tuesday when i see the surgeon. +++++Karen+++++

Hi Karen, When I had my RNY, I also had my gallbladder removed and a hernia repair.  I knew of the gallblader removal and the RNY but had no clue about the hernia repair until afterwards.  They ask you to sign all kinds of release forms on the morning of surgery in the event they need to do other things.  Hey, better to have it done at that time then to be rushed to the ER to have it done afterward, right? Maryellen, Thanks for the info. I guess it is more common (hernia) then I thought. You are right it is better that they fix u up While you are there then have to return for another procedure later. Did the additional procedures effect your recovery rate? Thanks again  Karen

Hey, If you had a hernia you would know it.  Most incisional hernias are from pervious surgies b/c the lining of the stomach gets thin.  I had one was repaired in March and I have  a small one growing as well but I have to have another surgery anyway soon so they will repair it then. The surgeon is usually the one who finds hernia when they feel your belly but usually its just obivous when you look at your belly.  I look like I have a  doll head coming out of my stomach right now.  to give you an idea and that is considered small!
