I just had surgery about 3 weeks ago. I have this bad taste in my mouth and this film over my teeth and tounge- did anyone have this? What is it and how do I get rid of it? I brush my teeth and it still comes back. I think it is starting to make everything I drink taste bad for me. If I have Crystal Light the after taste kills me. Before surgery it never bothered me!! Please someone help!!! Thanks

i dont know if this is correct cause my similar situation came from a sort of chemo ive been taking for close to a year now... i had a fuzz on my touge and the doc gave me a swish and swallow thingy to do and it healed ....however spicey **** will never be the same as well as cimamon..like sugar free cinamon candys .... but my advice to you as my advice to everyone is call the doc it sounds almost like what i had and that was thrush ...nothing to be alarmed at the swish and swallow works great Stacy

ok i had Dr Holover 9 weeks ago tomorrow and you are most probably in ketosis which translate to the suirgery ois working keep brushing and keep drinking water it will slow down eventually but if thats what means the surgery ios working well ill take it i had the same thing till about a week ago I stillhave it bad in the morning and sometimes in the evening call and ask him as well but it sounds like ketosis

It could just be ketosis. Everyone goes through it just after surgery, it should pass in a few weeks/months as you start to eat a more normal diet. If you develop a thrush (kind of like peach fuzz on your tongue), call your doctor, it could be a bacterial overgrowth and you might need an antibiotic. As far as tastes go, they change after surgery. Your taste buds for the most part will return to normal within the year. Unfortuantely some foods you loved before surgery, will never have that same 'appeal' after surgery. Scott

Tara: Talk w/ your surgeon, it may be thrush, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oral_thrush and you'll need nystatin, can happen when U r on antibiotics, poor diet etc or could be ketosis! Bad breath can be an inevitable side-effect of WLS.....This can be related to the rapid wt loss and burning of fat as feul, and the ketones that are escaping your body....this is also made worse as we are eating a high protein low/non carb diet (because you are burning fat as feul and a side effect is ketosis, and the body has to get rid of these toxins somehow, and this is one way, this is just ANOTHER reason it is important to drink lots of water/fluid, so the kidneys can process them also!) It can decrease your appetite (the ketosis) and even make you sort of nauseated....I have heard brushing your teeth/tongue frequently, sucking on sugarless mints, and drinking water can help (although this is not the case for you!)...Time will help also, if it con't to bother you talk to your nutritionist/surgeon for recommendations!
