Scott, That is good, now some would say that they are needed forever and others say to much protein is a bad thing. :shurg: I just don't know what the true answer is so I try to get around 60-80 grams a day in protein. Yeah walking at lunch really helps with the work stress and all so I am hoping even when it gets really cold I can still do it but have to dress really warm. I do have the treadmill at home just in case but I would rather do it while at work. Thanks hun Debra P

Hey Debra, I'm pretty sure 20 grams of protein is the same whether it comes from a shake or a few eggs. Yesterday I ate 118 grams of protein, without the shake. I did have a protein bar (16 grams of protein) because i wanted a snack that wasn't carb filled...and i personally like the taste of the marathon low carb bars...and I thought that would be better then another brownie..lol. BTW i forgot to add an apple to my list of foods I ate yesterday. (I want to keep accurate account). Scott

Scott, OK I will add the apple... That is what I thought but others say that our bodies do not absorb the food protein and they need the shakes. I am not sure so I can not say either way and I do not do them all that often myself. Only on days that I did not have time but wanted to make sure I got some protein in. It does not happen all that much anymore, believe me! Take care Debra P

I don't usually post in these threads because being preop, I'd throw off the curve even more than Scott with his DS but I've been reading them lately to get a real-life account rather than the info packet the Nut. gave me.... and I also like to see some of the reactions to Scott's daily intake... it's funny. anyway, I saw this thread was going in a direction I could actually help out in regarding protein intake, it doesn't matter so much whether it's from "actual food", a shake, or a bar... though being close to liquid, the shake DOES have the advantage that you don't have to worry about mashing the heck out of it the way you would with a couple forkfuls (or a sandwich) of tuna.... so it might be easier for you to avtually intake higher amounts in the shake form.... and if you find one you actually like the taste of, you can actually use a little more powder (3 scoops instead of 2.... or whatever) to make a mega-protein shake. with that said, it's not so much whether it's fod or shake, but more importantly, what the source of protein is.... whey, soy, egg, casein Whey - abosorbed the fastest... usually around 30 min in a normal system. probably the best for bariatric post-ops, as the two main reconstructive procedures (RNY & DS) both have a fairly significant malabsorptive component to them Casein - absorbed the slowest... 3 hours or more.... I would think this to be a waste for bariatric patients... you'd expell a good amount of it before you got a chance at absorption Egg - medium absorption... around 1-3 hours. probably best to use as a snack or meal replacement... in the form of an actual EGG (hard or soft boiled, poached, scrambled, etc) so in addition to the protein, you get the other good stuff in there... and it'll do a little better job at filling you up. Soy - average to medium.... though a little slower than whey, it's still absorbed at a decent rate. probably good enough to use in the place of whey. Moreso for the benefits to women that soy products can have.... and of course, being derived entirely from plant material, it is vegetarian friendly... but if you are VEGAN, check the label of the specific brand/flavor you are using to see if it's ok for you all in all, for post-op bariatric patients, WHEY protein is your best bet for supplementation.

See what wrong with my body that it hate whey. Even preop, if i tried to eat whey i'd get so gassy....casein worked well with my system...but i see that those atkins shakes i've been downing might not bet the best thing (atkins main protein is casein i think..although it does have some soy in it)..DARN!!! Soy is good, but it's hard to get one that tastes good. Oh well I guess i'm sticking to scrambled eggs. Jay Rob has an egg protein shake...and it's just NASTY!!! I thought i was going to hurl chunks after trying it. I've heard that there are good egg protein shakes out there that taste like custard, but i haven't found one as of yet. Oh well at least for now i'm off the juice....i guess i'll have to get some more of the Profect drinks when i'm ready for plastics. They are whey based and because they are only 3 oz didn't give me such a hard time. Scott

have you tried to modify a soy protein shake by adding some sugar free flavor syrups? I forget the brand, but there's one out there that has something ridiculous like 40 flavors just set yourself up a bar, but instead of booze, jars of protein powder, and bottles of SF syrups

Sean, Thanks for all the info hun and it is just so hard to take it all in. The s/f syrups are made by DeVinci and they are just awesome....they really do make the protein shakes so much better. I found that adding more ice makes it more like ice cream. Thanks again and you can always post what you eat, either pre- or post ops! All is good to get used to doing. Take care Debra P

Sean, It's so funny, there are two things that make me gassy as all heck and I avoid and that is Whey protein and sugar alcohol. Even preop these those two things bothered me. The sugar alcohol, it's always caused me gas....and now it's like clock work. 2-4 hours after i eat a dose of sugar alcohol, i'll be farting up a storm. I remember at about 2 months out, I ate a balance low carb bar. They have about 8 or 10 grams of sugar alcohol (malitol). I went to the store, and Sean, for about 4 hours at the mall, I was praying no sales person would come near me. I had to keep moving, because i was leaving a trail...fortunately I didn't trip any toxic gas alarms...so they didn't have to evacuate the mall or send in the HASMAT people in full chemcial suits. Live and learn ..thats what I say.....so for me there's no sugar alcohol in my future...unless i eat it at night just before i go to bed. Scott

Yesterday was okay. Here's what I had to eat: B- 1.5 scoops Wegmans chocolate whey protein powder 1 cup 1% milk 1 cup frozen blueberries S- 3 Russell Stover Low Card truffle cups (HOLY DELICIOUS, BATMAN!) L- 1 large egg 1.5 oz. Cabot Tomato Basil Cheddar cheese D- 1 large baby zucchini squash 1 oz. Cabot Tomato Basil Cheddar cheese S- 1 scoop NSA vanilla ice cream (@Friendly's) *Got sick to my Princess Pouchie after the ice cream, but didn't vomit. Besides that, I was pretty pleased with my levels yesterday. And today's even better. Here's what fitday.com had to say about my totals: 692 calories, 27 grams fat, 55 carbs, and 67 grams protein. Pretty neat, huh? I'll take it. Have a wonderful day, everyone! Good luck on your journeys! Jen Halliday

Jen, That s/f and NSA ice cream really does scare me, I do eat from a s/f frozen yogurt stand but now they are closed for the winter. But it was only a treat from time to time. I do get the Dannon Carb smart ice creams.....yuuumm also blue bunny makes some really great NSA ice cream as well as Klondike(sp?) Sugars are all good in them so it is cool.....still have to watch the carbs on some of them.... Debra P
