Do protein shakes or ready to drink protein drinks count towards our liquid intake? Has anyone tried the atkins ready to drink protein drinks? I'm having problem getting my protein in this week and need something easy to help me out. Thanks Pat

Hi Pat The way our nutritionist taught us is that if you use a Protein shake/drink as a meal that it doesn't count as your liquid intake because we are required 64 or more in liquid daily plus the meals. Plus, from what I understand, a protein shake doesn't flow through you as fast as water cause its much thicker. Its made to keep you full a l ittle longer. But check with your nutritionist anyway. They would be m uch better to ask. Marie

Pat, I would check with your surgeon/nutrionist because they are all different! I thought that if it was the clear Izopure it might count but I can not be sure. Debra P

Pat: Hello! There are many differing views on protein shakes in general (to use/not to use/which ones to use/what to mix thrm with/whey/soy/powder vs premade, fluid content etc). My 2 cents, save teh money on premades (use in emergency only) the powders are less expensive and just as tastey (*finding one u like is key) in the longterm, and hey a scop in an old water or snapple bottle dried all u ned to do is add water **** if u want to carry) and away you go! Protein shakes are meant really to be a suppliment I do not count them toward my fluids for the day, I shoot for 64 oz at least of PURE WATER (nothing added) and usually get double that. Never had a protein shake fill me at all EVER even early on, no matter how thick I mad ethem, the pouch is like a funnel or slow leaky drain and fluids slip out (so can soft foods such as yogurt and cottage cheese) but this is individual. Here are all the sites *I* know of for ordering samples of protein. ******************************** www.vitalady.com (a 10 yr+ postop who runs this business w/ her hubby who is also 10+ yrs out!) www.wlssupplies.com www.bethsproteinboutique.com (she is a wlser in NY, where you can get my fav PVL whey gourmet) www.bariatriceating.com *run by a wlser Susan Maria, she has written a book before & after WLS... www.enjoyhealth.com ******************************** I will say tastes CHANGE for many after WLS so if you find some now you like you MAY not like them postop....BUT I agree samples are the way to go! (*saves you money from buying a tub of something you can't/don't like to drink!) ''I'' don't think GNC has much that is tasty though....So ordering online seems to be best (for me)! Powdered pre-digested whey concentrate, or isolate or a blend of the 2 proteins are the kind/s that gastric by passers can BEST absorb! and are highly bioavailable. And so much better tasting IMHO and cheaper (70 servings in a 5# tub champion Pure Whey stack for $25.99 + 4.95 S&H = 44 cents a serving!!! (canned can be $1 ea or more!) good in a pinch though...
