need help
Harry:
Hi!
as a 4 yr (almost!) postop, I can say bowel habits do vary according to food intake, we can get a GI virus/bug also just like preop! Food poisoning can happen to us as well. exercise amount/lackof.
Anynew foods? Meds? Any changes at all!?
Constipation is pretty common in post RNYS (due to decreased intake of fiber and higher protein intake, calcium supplimentation and sometimes iron supps etc). Any pain associated here? Change in water/fluid intake? I use 2 stool softeners a day (OTC Colace) and Flax seed groung 1 Tablespoon 3x day JUST TO GO! IF ther is pain involved or this con't start w/ your PCP or call your WLS surgeon, to rule out other issues (medical or surgical in nature!) Bowel obstructions can happen post RNY yes this late or later out from surgery, we are still able to get Irritable bowel syndrome or other GI disorders (not that it is r/t WLS) hope that helps! Also if you want to know whats up w/ longer postops look to these 2 groups also!

Hey Harry,
The advice really depends on what kind of surgery you had, but in general you can try looking at your diet, and see if there are any triggers. I know for instance if i eat sugar alcohol (esp. malitol), i get gas 4 hours later, it's like clock work. You might have something like that in your diet.
Some people get DHR for a few days after eating their "trigger foods" until their bodies go back to normal.
If you had the DS, you can try adding some fiber to your diet when you are having DHR, and some extra fat to your diet when your going the other way.
If it's really bad, I'd go see roslin or your PCP, and make sure everything is ok.
