Can anyone help me find an insurer who will cover RNY surgery for my son. He lives in Putnam County in NY and is currently not insured. He's 29 and is really in need of this surgery soon... I am a postop (1 1/2 years), but I had my surgery in Florida and live in Florida. We've so far had no success in finding insurers in NY. If possible, I'd like to get him insured and then possibly come to Florida to have my surgeon do the RNY down here. Any ideas? Thanks!! Janet

I have Univera and they were very accomadating. I live in western NY and I know alot of companys will NOT allow out of state approvals unless it isn't offered in their state. Good luck. ~~hugs and well wishes~~ Chris

Hey Janet, I live in orange county (not too far from your son). If you go on NY Heath departments web site, you can purchase low cost health insurance if your son makes under a certain amount of money a year. We purchased a family plan for my wife and kids for about 300 a month, to purchase that policy without the Healthy NY Plan it would have cost us about 1200 dollars a month. Also if he is married, has kids, etc...he might qualify for free health insurance. Most of these plans will not pay for out of state surgeries. But to be honest, unless your son is moving to florida, it is best for him to be in driving distance to his surgeon. Fortuantely most people do not have complications, but just in case he does, he needs to be close enough to have follow up visits with his surgeon. There is a decent medical practice in westchester, I had gone to them origionally, but then decided to go to manhattan for surgery. I went to the practice that did al rokers surgery....very good surgeons, plus my surgeon was skilled in the DS which is the surgery i wanted. I hope this helps scott
