Hi,

Please understand that having Bariactric surgery is definately NOT the easy way out!! The 1st 6 months is "easier" only because you cannot eat much.  But with with the RNY or the VGS you still really have to work at it .  I am grateful i had the surgery but ive been slipping the last two years ( and gained back weight) because of listening to other people .  Please don't listen to other people.  If you were diabetic and neededinsulin woukd that be taking the easy way out?  I don't believe i would be alive today if not for the surgery....please find a good support group and lose the weight for YOU !!  YOU ARE...WORTH IT

Hi I'm new to this site I just signed up today.

I'm a vegan for 3 years next month I can only offer vegan advice from my own experience. I haven't had Gastric surgery I'm currently considering Gastric sleeve. I'm seeking advice/info on the pros/cons of being self pay in addition to if it's time for me to try something different for fat loss other than traditional exercise and diet.

Topic: New To This Site Vegan Considering Gastric Sleeve

Hi Everyone,

I'm new to this site and I really don't know where to start/post.

I'm currently considering gastric sleeve self pay due to struggling for a decade to release the unwanted fat. I'm vegan and I love it (being vegan has helped me due to my dairy allergy). I've been a "yo yo dieter" for over 10 years my weight goes up and down constantly.

I want to finally get a grip on things for good (weight loss tool). I do excerise and eat healthy yet for some reason that seems to not be enough for my body type. I'm concerned that I could reach my former weight and I told my self that I would never want to be or allow myself to ever get that big again (over 280 almost 300).

So what I need help with is the whole stigma of Bartric Surgery people always assume "it's the easy way out" or that people who get it are lazy and somehow "cheated".

I also want to know about the potential pros and cons of being self pay as well as opinions concerning should I continue to strive towards my "natural weight loss journey" or if it's time for me to try something else (I'm currently 100lbs over weight).

Thanks

Topic: RE: Paleo diet and too much food?

I'm always impressed at how Crossfit and Paleo seem to go hand in hand.

Paleo, to me......just makes sense.  Natural eats.  The stuff we were designed to eat.  Dropping the unwanted toxins and additives.  Makes good, clean sense.

The portions and the specific macro-content still has to be analyzed so your protein/carb/fat goals are met.   Some folks just seem to content to be under the blanket of a named plan.  It has a name....thusly they equate it with getting specific results.  Results are commensurate with how well they measure and evaluate their intake within any plan.

Case in point is something that happened the other day at work.  I have a coworker who is among the most fit individual I encounter on a day to day basis.  Guy routinely jogs to work.....puts in 12+ hours shifts.......jogs home.  He's a Crossfitter and dialed in on his health in general.  His wife is, too.  They should have their own fitness show on television or whatever.

We have ongoing conversations on fitness and nutrition and he's helped me a great deal.

He had some type of all-Paleo ingredient pan of fruity-nutty-"brownie" like things he brought in to work and shared.  Folks were eating them and one guy in particular was cramming them in.  Somebody joked with him, telling him to slow down and leave some for everyone else.....his reply, "Hey.....these are diet, right ?    They are Paleo so I'm good to go, right?".

I couldn't help but laugh.  That was me years back.  As long as my way of eating had a name, I felt the battle was half won.

Now I know the truth is in the macros and measurements of whatever name it has.

Much respect to your exercise level and your healthy way of eating.  That is is awesome.

I find myself more and more in the Paleo way of grocery shopping and eating.  Quick daily runs through the perimeter of the grocery stores.....fresh stuff......natural stuff......tasty stuff.     I've just had to learn that a handful of blueberries is great......not the whole carton, lol.

Live, love and make the most out of what your surgeon has done for you...........live your life without excuses and without regrets.

Topic: RE: Vegan Protein?

I recently became a vegan, and very hard to give up the familiar food. I want to learn a lot of information about proper nutrition because my body needs food harmful. But I know that I'm on the right track! I read a lot of different articles and can advise me something like this article ????

WOW- I could have written this post myself. almost to a T!

I lost just about 70 lbs but have regained 30. struggling with a physical move, job relocation, and loss of a parent too. I have not really mourned, I don't think...I find myself overwhelmed with bouts of tears and almost hyperventilating, because the hurt becomes so severe in my heart, but I force myself to divert and think of something else.

I am seeing a new surgeon, and have an appointment with their PSYCH in 2 weeks to start dealing with all this. I feel like all of these changes/losses combined are what pointed me in a downward spiral. I too can tolerate almost ALL sugary junk.

I am very committed to get back on track, and have really tried to research various  things. the information out there is absolutely overwhelming.

spouse  and I were going to try keto, but I keep watching youtube videos to learn how to calculate/track all those macros and i'm becoming more confused by the minute.

going to just try some VERY BASIC bariatric rules: 80g protein, water, drop the soda, decrease the carbs big time, and clean it up. that's my starting point...

good luck to you and my condolences.

Topic: Paleo diet and too much food?

I had the sleeve procedure 7.5 years ago and have been lucky to keep most of the weight off.  In the last 2 years, I've gotten into Crossfit as my fitness choice.  Along with that comes the information of a paleo-eating lifestyle (which I love).  But, like most, I'm interested in losing more fat on my body and I've tried the paleo diets that help you keep within your macros to lose fat.  However, the portions are way too large.  I've been told that I'm not losing b/c I'm not eating the amount of food that the diet requires.  Does anyone else have this problem?  For instance, my lunch may consist of 3oz of beef but 2-3 cups of vegetables which is not even possible.  So I scale it back, but I'm still not losing weight.

Any ideas, tips?

Thanks!

What you're asking isn't very realistic, but there is a lot you can do in advance of your appointment. Most if what you can lose is water weight, but it might make a difference on the scale. (Is losing this weight a condition of approval?)

Cut out as many carbs as you can ( no bread, rice, pasta, sugar etc)

eat mostly protein, 3-4 oz per meal. For simplicity sake, aim for servings the size of a deck of cards( but I suggest buying a scale, youll need it post op)protein = chicken, pork, fish, beef, eggs. I'd avoid anything salty that might make you retain fluids.

Low carb veggies: dark leafy greens, cabbage, broccoli, cauliflower

Drink a lot of water, and don't drink any calories. No juice, etc.

Having said all that,  I think your energy is better served by showing your surgeon you a learning about nutrition, and how you will manage meals and post op life. The surgery isn't a cure. You need to learn everything you can to make it work!

good luck!
