Topic: RE: Im afraid im overeating

Hi Jennylynn353,

I had my surgery on May 24, 2017. I'm having the same problem with overeating. I try hard to use a food scale but I'm not always home when I eat. I was told that we would be eating about 2.0 ounces of food for about the first 3 months. Many people have increased it to 4.0 ounces afterwards. We should break up our meals to about 6 a day and then bring it down to 3 a day without snacks in at 3 months out. Currently I try to weigh out 2.5 to 3.0 ounces for each of my 3 meals but I can eat more than that. I do try to use a Bariatric timer try to make sure I divide my bites out for 30 mins. The important this is eating enough quality protein in small amounts to reach your protein goal. Also, if you're still worried about over eating or not being full quickly, I'd contact you surgeon to ensure you're still on the right track. : ) -bbrantner06

Hi everyone I just had surgery on June 22 and so far I've done well losing weight however I feel like I am able to eat more than what I should. For example today for lunch I ate 1 piece of toast with 1 egg. That just seems like a lot of food for this soon after surgery. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. thank you in advance

Topic: RE: Protein and Carbohydrates for a 5 year post op Gastric Bypass Patient?

it sounds like you want to lose what you have gained? has the first issue been too many sweets, or too much processed i.e. pizza, etc? can you point to why the gain occurred..was it 35 lbs a year slowly, or quickly in year 2?

If you are eating high quality protein (of all kinds) then the minimum for men-not bariatric- is 56gr (per livestrong.com) but I know 70-80 gr per day is absolutely advised for LIFE per the bariatric nutritionist I talked with in discussion of RNY recently.

I know most protein is dense enough to keep me satiated longer, and putting protein powder into whatever else you eat-soup, shakes, in hot cereal, or a quality yogurt works, even with a 1/2 cup serving..ie if you like cream of wheat, or grits and add 1 scoop =7 -11 gr -protein powder to it, it all adds up.

but the body will not have issues without any 'specific number' of carbs..which tend to activate insulin response, so you get hungry faster/BG goes up. (one potato is = to 6 cubes of sugar in how the pancreas reacts to it. but protein won;t do that.

I'm researching quite a bit on all bariatric and am possibly leaning to an "endoscopic gastric sleeve procedure that sews a smaller stomach (no surgery, no stomach removed) so the post op for life diet is the same..getting protein first.

Hi I was wondering I am 5 years post op and am wondering what should my protein intake be per day in grams and what should my carbohydrate intake be per day in grams? Thanks for your help. I have regained 70 lbs over the past 2 years and I am trying to get back on track. Thanks again. God bless!

Topic: Doc says I'm not getting enough calories. Help?

I've been weight lifting for about a month and I've progressively gotten more and more tired and it's been getting harder. My doc says I'm not getting enough calories and I had been doing 1500 and struggled to get that in. He says I should be doing 2000 and look to add that in with my protein drinks.

anyone else have this issue?

If you have had success raising ferritin, were you using just one of the Iron patches a day or did you need to use multiple patches per day?

Thanks!!

I have been using the iron patch for over a year with good results.

I only use one but would use two or more if it was necessary to raise/keep my ferritin up.

Topic: RE: Savory Oatmeal - Yes or No?

I don't eat grains anymore, but before surgery I had a huge container of oats and wanted to try savory as well. Wasn't bad, but they weren't steel cut; the texture was a little weird but overall, I'd have had it again. I remember I made them with Mexican seasonings and some onion (as I recall). If you Google savory oatmeal recipes, there are quite a few out there.

Topic: Low Iron levels -- when to see a hematologist for possible iron infusion

I'm 6 1/2 years post-op RNY and I've felt fantasti****il 2 summers ago. Then I had zero energy. And then all of a sudden I started getting migraines. I had testing done for the migraines & they haven't determined why I get them. Anyhow, I've recently had bloodwork done and my iron level was low. Hemoglobin was 10.6 the first time so my family doctor has me taking iron supplements 325 mg iron sulfate. Then bloodwork was rechecked again 3 months later. Hemoglobin was 10.8 and Ferritin was 8. He tripled my iron supplements (which btw I'm taking 500mg Vitamin C supplements w/ each iron pill.) I've read on here that our bodies don't absorb the sulfate iron as well as it absorbs the heme or carbonyl. So my questions are:

1) Should I let my PCP know about the other iron supplements & suggest that he prescribe one of those to me?

2) Should I go to a hematologist?

3) At what point does someone need an iron infusion? Does anyone know how low the Ferritin level needs to be?

Topic: RE: Protein Shakes

Not sure how far out you are but if you are within the first year post-op it's going to happen so just bear with it. I have thin hair to start with and did lose quite a bit especially in front above the temples (sort of the top 'corners' of my forehead area). It's a combination of anesthesia, surgical shock to the body plus a dramatic reduction in calories that your body is reacting to. It'll pass. Hang in there.

Use this as a good time to try a new cut to go with the new body. I got a rocking pixie cut (from a bob) and I love it. Plus it helps get through this phase. Besides that keep up your protein and vitamins but really there is no magic fix.

Surgery: April 30, 2014: HW: 288 SW: 250 Achieved Goal 149 lbs: April 8, 2015 CW: 158 lbs (working on losing 65 lb regain as of June 1, 2021. Weight was at 215 lbs). Fighting every darn day!

Topic: Never thought I would ever say it.

I have been away from the forum for awhile. I've been attending support group meetings. My problem...I am 5 days away from 6 mos. after RNY. I have lost 75lbs and I just can't drink my shakes or protein food. I don't want to lose too fast. I started losing a lot of hair at 5 mos!!! Any ideas?
