Topic: Becoming savvy about the amount of protein you have??

I am trying to get my 100-120 grams of protein as well as 100 grams of carbs in each day...  just wondering how many of you post-surgery continue to count grams each day or do you just "know" that you are getting close to the right amount?  I still watch my 64 ounces of water... but the protein I just assume I am getting enough based on what I eat, and if I feel a bit short for the day I will supplement in the evening with a protein drink or something similar.  My surgeon did not put me on a calorie limit, just the amount of protein and carbs I needed each day.  Obviously, I am not able to eat as much when I limit myself to 3 meals and 3 skim milk snacks.  So I have to be protein aware at every meal.  But counting I don't do any more.

Hi,

I mixed the vanilla with strawberries today as suggested. I could still taste the powder but I think it may just take some getting used to. I drank it quickly which I know after surgery will need to slow down. One step at a time. Thanks for all the suggestions, I  will try almond milk Monday after doing groceries!

thanks again for the support!

Topic: RE: 1 month post VSG, question about caloric intake

Hi Jeepsport,

Congrats on your surgery.

For me, it does help to monitor my caloric intake.  I have never been very good at moderation.  I suppose all of us suffer from that to some degree or we wouldn't be here, would we?  I am afraid to simply leave myself up to my own devices as it were.  That has obviously not worked for me in the past.   I have become very reliant upon Myfitnesspal.  I log EVERYTHING that I eat, and I set my goals in terms of percentages to make sure I'm hitting my protein goal first, and then don't go too far on the fat and carbs.  It works very well for me.  I can look at my progress throughout the day on the Nutrition page and then decide what foods I need to eat to hit my protein goals and stay within my carb and fat limits.

For the most part, I have been planning in my entire day (except for dinner in general) including all snacks and lunch ahead of time.  Either in the morning or the night before and I log everything in as I pack my cooler bag with all that I will need for the day.  This makes things so much easier for me.  There is no decision making when it comes time to eat.  I know exactly what I will eat because I have it logged into my app and I have it prepared and sitting in my cooler bag.

Again, this works for ME.  Each of us has to come up with his or her own way of living.  I am being very fastidious about it, especially now in the first 6 months because I not only want to hit my goal as soon as possible and really take advantage of the honeymoon period, but I also want to use this time to really teach myself new habits that will carry me through a lifetime of healthy eating and healthy weight maintenance.

Try different things and see what works for you.

Topic: RE: 1 month post VSG, question about caloric intake

I'm just starting pureed food stage (about 2 weeks post-op). I wasn't given a caloric target, just 60-80 grams protein a day. Do you feel that counting calories has been helpful to you? And may I ask what you were eating to get your required protein in? I'm so worried about not hitting that target!

Thanks.

Hi everyone,

Thanks

I don`t use that brand, I use Syntrax Nectar Vanilla and I mix it with 1/2 water and 1/2 unsweetened Vanilla Almond Milk.    I also use the same Almond Milk with Chocolate Protein Powder...to me it tastes like a fudgecycle kind of, I put in freezer  for about 15 minutes, not to freeze but to get ice ice cold.....YUM  :)

I do use Soy Milk and Regular milk ...always mixed with 1/2 water....but I  prefer the Almond Milk the best...

I don't use that particular brand, but I have the same issue with the Premier Protein Vanilla Shakes that I've tried.

I tried different things, and what finally worked for me is to mix in a good deal of pureed, strained strawberries. I used fresh strawberries from my garden, which had been pureed, strained and frozen. This morning, I'm going to try the same thing with store-bought frozen strawberries. It is really good! Something about the tartness of the strawberries seems to perfectly counteract the weirdly sweet taste of the protein drink.

I hope this helps - let me know what you think, and good luck!
