How to get it all in

My RNY with a Hiatel Hernia repair was almost 6 weeks ago. Two weeks after my surgery I had to have my gall bladder removed. Since that time I have been hospitalized 3 times for Dehydration, severe nausea, vomiting, an ulcer in my pouch and pancreatitis. I am at home now and trying to get things started again. I am technically still on the puréed diet. I am struggling so much with how to get all the hydration in and how to get 100g of protein a day too. After feeling like crap for 6 weeks, I am scared to try new things as I already vomit at least once a day and I really don't want to do anymore if I can help it. I am scared of meat, sugar, anything  "Normal" or not "non fat".  I also cannot get any of my pills down or to stay down. I know there's many things I'm struggling with in this post but any advice would help.

Whoa that's a lot to deal with! Hope you are finally on the mend! I'm almost 4 months out and I still haven't hit  100 grams of protein.

I would suggest looking at what you can eat, and make gradual improvements.

Look at how much wAter you can drink now, and increAse byan ounce or two every day or so. Also, try different temps and flavourings. I'm all about room temp water post op. That was definitely not the case before.

what protein can you tolerate? I was very conservative when introducing new foods. I would try 1/2 to one ounce. And only once per day. Then I'd have liquids the other two. That way, if I did have a bad reaction, it wasn't that much food. And I didn't have to wonder if it was because I ate too much etc.

keep trying, you'll get there, just not over night.

Oh wow, you have really had a tough recovery!  I hope things calm down for you now.

According to my nut & surgeon, water/fluids is more import than food. Those of us who've had wls have plenty of body fat stores to sustain us when we aren't getting calories, but we can get very ill very fast from not getting enough fluids. In fact they told us that dehydration was the number one cause of rehospitalization

So, you might want to focus on getting your calories in the form of liquids at this point   I had a lot of trouble tolerating foods the first month or two, including protein drinks; here are some "calories" I discovered I could always tolerate during the early stages:

  • split pea soup (removed any hunks of ham; chew chunky-style soups well before swallowing)  it's super high in protein and most types are very low in fat
  • lactose free cottage cheese (chew well before swallowing)
  • Fat-free re-fried beans (alone or on crackers)
  • "chicken soup" protein
  • Once soft non-puréed foods were allowed:
  • - fresh strawberries (all other fruits made me dump)
  • - moist mild fish (salmon, flounder, tilapia) with broccoli (steamed till very soft) and a little mashed potato or sweet potato (no added fats or sugars)
  • - saltine crackers with a tiny schmear of pub and low-sugar strawberry jelly

a lot of things that are commonly recommended did not work well for me -- eggs, chicken, yogurt or anything made from milk (like many other wls-ers , I'm now lactose intolerant) -- all of these caused major stomach pain.

Hope those ideas help. Hang in there!
