My new die****er, broth and navel lint

Howdy - Having my RNY on the 14th. I have a history of gout and kidney stones and have been told that my chance for future occurrences will increase.  Anyone have the same situation? I want to lose weight but I dont want to live off water, broth and navel lint.

My last bout with stones blocked my R kidney for a week and felt like a knife in my back. Gout pain would have been better.

I'll do the surgery to get diabetes, high blood pressure, and joint pain off the table. I just want to prep for the battle to come.

Thx

Ah, kidney stones.  I've been getting them since age 12 and I'm 37 now.  We are lifetime friends it seems.  I have had a few since surgery nine freaking months ago.  Things you can do are to ensure that you're getting all of your fluids and calcium CITRATE not carbonate.  But those of us who are prone to stones are prone to stones.

For what it's worth, my two stones post-op have been easier than any of my stones pre-op.  I think it might be because I'm getting so much more liquid?  They still suck, of course, but neither got to the vomiting from pain point and they passed on their own.  So that's something at least.

Everyone I know who has had gout pre-op has had it get better with weight loss post-op.  But I've got no personal experience, just anecdata.

Hi Gwen and thanks for the reply.  My patient specific meeting w/ dietician is next week but I am eager to answer questions so I am not surprised after the SX.

My stone was the size of a 9mm bullet so there was no passing it. :(

For now, I will stick with the mantra hydrate, hydrate, hydrate.

I've had a number of stones that have needed lithotripsy over the years - sad times :(  They suck.

I had surgery November 6th and have had 3 episodes of very painful gout.  The drs put me on prednisone as a short term measure but I haven't been able to get a real solution yet.  If I were you I would see a rheumatologist (my next course of action) and try to get a solution.
