To Powder Or Not To Powder ?
I don't think there is a "best for everyone" but the ones I've used are double rich chocolate or peanut butter cookie. I mix them with unsweetened original almond milk in a blender bottle. They both taste great but I tend to stick to the chocolate and just use the PB one as a treat when I want a change. The chocolate is a bit more bitter than a lot of chocolate shakes, which I'm really happy about. I don't like overly sweet things.
You want something that's high in protein, low in carbs, and tolerable.

Hi Curlygreen,
I am a few years out and am a Wellness Consultant now. I talk to a lot of people about protein powders and meal replacement, particularly those that need dense nutrition with limited caloric intake. Whey protein is amazing and you can even use it in your cooking. I make pancakes, cookies, muffins and snacks for my little guy with some whey based meal replacement powder sprinkled in. If you are going to do a powder I suggest you look for UNDENATURED Whey Protein concentrate. Protein that has been processed using high heat becomes denatured (flattens the molecule) and makes it more difficult to digest and can cause bloating and discomfort. To help you feel not so lost, here's the basic skinny on Whey protein powders: I can recommend some products to you that taste great if you haven't found what you are looking for yet.
There are three types of whey protein sold today:
Whey Protein Concentrate – This form of whey contains low levels of fat and cholesterol and higher levels of bioactive compounds in the form of lactose. This is the best and least processed form.
Whey Isolates – In isolates, the fat has been removed, and they are lower in bio-activated compounds with a mild to milky taste. But the proteins can often be denatured.
Whey Hydro-isolates – The cost is typically higher for this type of whey, and they are less allergenic than the other two forms. This is by far the most processed of the types, and the protein in it has been denatured. I do not recommend this form of whey.
Don't buy too much in bulk in preparation for your post-op diet because before surgery I was able to make my own shakes, but after surgery they made me nauseaous. The only ones that I was able to tolerate (of the ones I tried) post-op was the Premier Protein shakes. And they are high in protein and so much easier because they are ready-to-go. Your tastebuds may change as well as what your new tummy can tolerate.
