Dry D is what we absorb better.  Dry D3. 

I have 50,000 IU because last October my D level was 25, which is terribly low.  It should be at least 80.  My surgeon advised me to take 50,000 IU dry D3 per day.   In January my level was 50, so I am continuing on the 50,000 for now.

I understand you were told 40 was OK but it's not.  Optimal levels are 80-100.  Some sources say even higher is better like up to 125.
