I am looking for an iron supplement .  I have been struggling with low iron for 4 months  - trying to do it with diet rather than supplement but now doctor wants to me to take a supplement.  Any recommendations?

thanks for your help

Hi Mari -

Check out this diagram.

Notice that the two places along the digestive tract that our body absorbs iron from food have been bypassed.  So to try and get your iron requirements from food is pretty much useless.  We NEED to take supplements that are already in the form that our body can use it ... we no longer have the ability to pull iron from food.

I'm not an expert on the types of iron or dosing amounts because I haven't done much research.  So far my iron levels have been alright.  However, Andrea U. is beyond expert level.  I read a post she made yesterday that was very helpful.  Here's the link ... hopefully it'll help you figure out what kind of supplement to take.

I use Vitron-C iron supplements. I have to have them special ordered from Rite Aid (you don't need a prescription tho). It's the Iron Ferrous Fumarate and it's 65 mg per tablet.
