Please Help with Protein Question
I'm 5 (?) weeks post op (3/25/08). I have been extended on liquids and protein 4-6 weeks instead of any food. Here is my question:
Walmart has the Super Advanced Whey Protein, 26g of Protein per scoop. It's only 12.57 for a 2lb container and it's the BEST protein EVER.
GNC has protein that is the same size, not as tastey and it's about 22.00 per container, 20g of Protein per scoop.
My question is this.. am I using the "right kind" of protein? I mean, these are ok, right? I am only buying the walmart one now but I want to make sure I'm not going to GAIN weight..LOL
Here are the two labels (**the walmart one I have is SUPER ADVANCED WHEY PROTEIN, same as this one I'm showing but it has 26g of protein per scoop, not 23, but the rest is the same). (you need adobe to view these labels)

I also use the Body Fortress protein powder from Wal-Mart.
To determine if it's the "right" protein you actually need to read the ingredients list on the label... not just the nutrition label. You're looking for Whey Isolate Protein. This is the best form of protein. The second best is Whey Concentrate Protein.
If you check the Body Fortress Label, you'll see it's a combination of Isolate and Concentrate. Same as the more expensive GNC brand.
Here's an interesting article on a body building forum about the difference between Isolate and Concentrate. Basically Isolate is about 90% pure and concentrate is about 80% pure protein. Not a lot of different in my opinion.

The grams per scoop will differ between brands because the scoop size is different. The scoop from the Nectar protein is larger than the Body Fortress scoop but have the same number of grams of protein per scoop -- even though you're using more with Nectar. When I use my Body Fortress I just use a heaping scoop full so I get about 30g instead of just 26g. (The new versions of Body Fortress now have 26g per scoop, the old ones had 23g, so your store might not have the new ones yet.)
