carbonated liquids

I have had gastric sleeve surgery, why is it that we can no longer drink carbonated liquids.  I would love a diet dr pepper every once in a while!!

I had RNY and I was told that the carbonation would expand in your pouch, and possibly stretch it. I was told I could have a sip or two but I had to let it sit over ice after opening it for a few minutes to let some of the carbonation (fizz) out of it. I have a child's Dr. Pepper when we go out every once in a while but I hardly ever fini**** because of the sugar, and I can not stand anything diet.

I'm having the Lap-Band and i was told the carbonation will cause the pouch to expand.
