Good morning everyone! First of all I would like to thank the member who posted the Carnie Wilson story on the news, it really was an eye opener for me.  I have managed to slowly put on 15 lbs.  My question to you experts is what type of diet do you think I should follow to get this weight off like ASAP!  I know about the high protein, low carb, low fat part, but what I'm wondering is should I just do liquids for like 2 weeks?  Or should I do 2 shakes a day & the rest protein & veggies, or 1 shake.?  How about the 5 day pouch test? This is my exercise plan starting tonight: (5 X a week) Workout with a personal trainer for 1 1/2 hour 2X a week ( 1 hour strength training, 1/2 hr cardio) Cardio for 45 minutes 3 X per week. My trainer wants me to eat a lot of carbs (oatmeal, fruits, whole wheat bread etc), so that I can have energy for my workouts.  I understand these are healthy choices, but my nut is totally against this to lose weight, she says protein, veggies & shakes.  Can anyone relate?  What do you guys think is the best approach?  Thank you soooo much for your time & help, & I apologize for the long post, but  I'm starting to feel like a failure... Thanks again, maggie

Listen to your nutritionist.  She knows how your surgery works and what is the best balance of nutrtion based on your altered digestive system.   Your trainer is basing his recommendation on people who have not had surgery  -- athletes rely on high carb diets for energy, but not necessarily for weight loss. You want your energy to come from stored fat and protein you eat.  If you add carbs, make sure you doing it in the form of fruit, veggies and whole grain startches. Also make sure you're tracking your food intake in a journal or online site like www.fitday.com.  This will help you stay on track and be accountable for what you're eating. Pam

I exercise at the gym quite a bit (about 10-11 hours per week) and I eat more carbs than most WLS folks to support my exercise "habit."  On most days, I eat 225-300 grams of carbs, 125-150 grams of protein, and 55-60 grams of fat.  If I want/need to lose, I have to stay in the lower portion of the carb range (225-250 grams), but I still lose pretty well even w/ that many carbs.  But 4 days a week, I go to the gym twice a day for an hour each time, then I usually do another 1 hour session one day and a 2 hour session another day.  So I am burning off a lot of energy through exercise.   Could/would I lose more if I ate more protein and less carbs?  Perhaps, but through trial and error I've learned that I lose best when I'm eating about 2000 calories per day and I just can't get that many calories from a mostly-protein diet on a long-term basis.  I don't like to take my daily protein intake about 150 grams on a regular basis, so that means I'm usually getting about 600 calories per day from protein.  The other 1400 calories has to come from somewhere, and I don't want it to come from a lot of fat...   Anyway, just another point of view.  I'm also 29+ months post-op, so my needs may be different than yours...  Good luck on your continuing journey -

Sorry for the double response, but I meant to suggest that rather than looking at a quick was to drop the 15 pounds you've put back on, you may want to consider simply reevaluating your daily food habits and determining where you're making unhealthy choices.  If you want to take off this 15 pounds and keep it off, you need to make small changes that you can maintain on a long-term basis.  A quick fix -- just proteins, or the 5-day pouch test -- is not going to solve the long-term problem.  But evaluating what you've been doing and making some small changes just might help you do that -  Again, good luck on your continuing journey - Kellie

Hi Maggie,    I posted about Carnie; but maybe others did too. I too am looking for answers to get back on track! I am seriously trying to get to my goal as well. I am doing www.fitday.com; have you done this or been there? I have been doing cardio on my treadmill & bike at least 5 x's a week, @ 45-60 min. each time. My family DR said cardio is great, but at this pt. it will not help me in my battle to continue to lose the weight. He also said that I need to do some weight trainning; this is a delima because I have issues right now with cerical problems and I am going to therapy!    As far as protien shake I do GNC 50 grand slam everyday! Have some trouble getting in my water. Been told to cut back on processed carbs. What types of carbs did your trainer suggest? How many calories should we take in daily? I can so totally relate to you; I get mixed messages from every direction! My NUT made me feel so badly last time I went, that I really don't want to go back! I think if we go back to the basics we will do better? Also may help if we buddy up with one another?? I fear failure more than anything!     I can't go back to my unhealthy lifestyle; and ways of eating! I want to be here for my hubby, kids and grandkids. I don't want to return to HB, diabetes, sleepapnea and more! I want to go on trips with my hubby; not give all my money to DR.'s. My family DR hasn't a clue about what happens to pt. after WL surgery! Family Dr's need some trainning in retrospect to help pt. along with their after care & sucess. We need to be proactive on our own behalfs!     I wish you the best Maggie; and maybe we can share information as we get it; and walk through the weeds together for a better outcome to our sucess!? Thanks for your post!! Wishing you the utmost sucess and best with your journey!  quote I discovered once: Life is a journey, not a guided tour for those who won't put in the effort!  Hugs, Judy R

Hi Judy!  How r u?  Well it seems we have a very similar situation with our weight loss journeys.  I've seen the fitday.com website & I even subscribed, but to me is too time consuming.  I did join Weigh****chers online & I'm keeping track of my daily points there, I think is much simpler & user friendly.  I've also committed to working out 5-6 days a week, but I'm sticking to cardio & toning workouts for now.  After I posted I spoke to someone who was involved at one time with the Miami Heat.  He said that when one of the basketball players gained a couple of pounds, they were told by their coaches or trainers to do strictly cardio until they dropped the pounds.  So majority wins, I'm going to stick to cardio for a month & see what happens.  I'm sticking with the basics on the eating plan.  This is my workout plan, maybe it will give you some ideas or you can give me some: Stationary Bike - 45 minutes 2 X per week Tae-Bo - 1 hour 2X per week Step Class - 1 hour 1X per week Walk / Jog - 45 min 1X per week What do you think?  We can do this!  Let's encourage one another! Blessings, maggie
