How Many Calories at 6 Months Out?

Hi, I am closing in on 6 months out from my surgery, and have lost 124 pounds thus far. I currently eat right around 800 calories per day and almost always get in 70+ grams of protein. Can you please advise, how many calories/day are typically suggested at 6 months out? Thanks, Jasmine

Hi Jas You know every surgeon has to be different!   At my 6 month post-op visit, my surgeon increased my daily caloric goal from 600 (which it had been up until my 6 month check-up) to 1000.   Wen

The "rules" that my NUT has for us are basically up to 1200 calories per day (more if exercising), 64 oz. water minimum, minimum 25 g of fat (max of 40 g), minimum of 60 g protein daily, spread out over 3 meals, 2 to 3 snacks, 3 to 4 servings of veggies, 1 to 2 servings of fruit and dairy, and the rest whole grains or protein. That said, it was right about at 6 months that I upped my calorie intake from about 800 to 900 a day to 1000 to 1100 daily. I am still in that range at 8.5 months out, occasionally I go over 1100, but never more than 1200. I do exercise regularly, and I do get in minimum of 80 to 100 oz. of water, and minimum of 75 g of protein (typically it's between 90 and 100 g daily). And obviously, as Wendy said, every surgeon/NUT is different, so take this with a grain of salt.

Wow, I feel like I am eating WAY TOO MUCH! I have been @ 1100-1200 since 4 months. I workout everyday and have still been losing so I guess I'm doing something right. Maybe I should re evaluate my calories. WHat do you eat daily?

I agree, if what you're doing is working, I wouldn't mess with it! Here's an example of a typical day for me: Bfst:  Crunchy cheese and veggie bacon strips. Snack:  Greek nonfat yogurt Lunch:  Grilled chicken and salad Snack:  New Whey protein  Supper:  Tofu; spinach salad with homemade balsamic vinaigrette; whole wheat crackers .125 C. of half & half in a couple cups of coffee during the day So right around 800 cals/day and 70+ g of protein. If I haven't gotten enough cals in, I will add a serving of soy crisps.  Also for an occasional treat, a piece of sugarless candy.
