Need advise for vitamin def
First off I know this is my own fault.I have been on disability for a year and half.I lost any medical insurance in may.I have not had blood work.Long story but I have not been able to afford any vitamins for about 6 months.Just this past month I have started taking a generic one a day vitamin, cal citrate d max, biotin, and 2500 b12 a day.I only could get those because I got a small tax return.
I have not been feeling well for a while and I know I am deficient. Its not ignorance and thinking nothing would happen but simply a situation I cant change.I am in a crack in the system where on paper I make 38 dollars too much for medicaid and because of it they want me to spend half my income on medical expenses and only then will I get reimbursed for that amount only.I dont make it now with 100 percent going to bills.
How long before I am in real trouble. What symptoms do I look for to know I am in trouble.I started the b12 when the sores in and around my mouth got bad.I can only afford protein shakes 1 week month. There are no clinics around here and my surgeons dietician will only take insured patients for consult and even if she recommended things I dont know if i could afford for affordable substitutions.I am literally between a rock and hard place. When I had surgery I didnt know I would ever get into a situation like this so it isnt denial or irresponsiblity. What can I do.I think its accumulated to the point I think I am in trouble but have no where to call,no where to get assistance, and dont even know if what I am taking is even minimally appropriate. When is the cut off where I should go for care even without insurance.I know you may not be able to answer that or give advise on that.I do regret one thing.I didnt do enough research into vitamin needs.I was on optisource until disability and I was told it provided everything and only needed extra b12 because my labs were off.Help? I know you cant give alot of the advise I am asking but I cant even call my surgeon because they require insurance and to my knowledge there is no such thing like the call a nurse services when you have insurance,to help those without.I have a laundry list of symptoms that accumulated have me worried/scared and not feeling among the living at times.
BY NO MEANS AM I SOMEONE TO LISTEN TO FOR MEDICAL ADVICE- BUT....I'm a 4 month RNY post op and here's my personal program:
Don't forget your iron (and to take it 2 hours separate from your calcium or else they cancel each other - plus take your calcium by itself 2 hours apart from everything for max absorption). There are 2 big types of anemia I've seen in the WLS worlds - B12 and Iron related.
Here's my vitamin schedule - so far it seems to be working:
0700:
1 of 3 Multivitamins
Iron (about 60 mgs)
1x 500 mcg B12 capsule
1000: 2 of 3 Multivitamins
1200: 3 of 3 Multivitamins
1500 (3pm): 600 mg Calcium cit.
1700 (5pm): 600 mg Calcium cit.
2000 (8pm): 600 mg Calcium cit.
Glass of milk before bed or while browsing the net at night.
1 time a week I take a 2500mg sublingual B12.
Also - Professor Weiner out of Germany had TONS of information on his website (note: he's not my doc but he seems to put most of his stuff on his site which is very helpful) There is info on nutrition and vitamins: http://www.profweiner.com/PI_diet_nutrition-03.htm
I'd go to the site, browse through - start with the FAQs page and keep clicking the link ..more questions and answers to browse through. There's stuff on nutrition, exercise, vitamins and more. You might find something helpful on there...
A multivitamin is a must. I saw the other person takes 3 a day, and maybe her NUT/surgeon recommends that. My NUT said that one a day is fine unless labs show otherwise (which so far, my labs have been fine).
Also, not everyone needs an additional iron supplement if their multivitamin has iron in it. And while we are prone to B-12 deficiencies, not everyone has an issue with that. Everyone definitely needs calcium. I have bloodwork this week for my 8 month labs and I'll know how they came out next week when I see my NUT again. My regimen is as follows:
a.m. - One Centrum Silver Chewable Multivitamin, 325 mg Ferrous Sulfate (just the generic drug store brand is fine), 500 mg Chewable Vitamin C
NOTE: I only take the iron and vitamin C on Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday. I was taking it every day (as per my NUT) and my levels came up just fine so they had me cut back to every other day.
Noon - UpCalD (Calcium Citrate with Vitamin D3...500 mg calcium citrate and 250 mg vitamin D3)
6 p.m. - Another dose of UpCalD, 1000 mcg B-12
NOTE: I only take the B-12 on Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday because my B-12 levels were high when my last labs were done, so I cut back from daily to every other day as per the NUT.
9 p.m. - Last dose of UpCalD
Thanks! I will have some idea now.I dont even look around much anymore because there are so many opinions and each surgeon is different I dont know what is right, who to listen to.I really regret that one thing.I never realized I would be an at home chemist with supplements.I found I knew all there is to know about the procedure itsetlf but did little research into life after other than the black and white. There was so much gray.I had so much trouble with the progression itself because of my gastritis I couldnt follow the suggestions.I was not creative and so into going by the book I was unprepared.I knew more about how and where they cut but nothing of what to do if,what does this mean,is this normal.I am afraid to ask at times.Because I get the usual how can you not justify spending money on vitamins. Its not justify, its just not there. Its not a choice or not justify. Thanks for the advise.I can say I am more concerned with how I feel now because of the adding symptoms than I did post op after major surgery. And its more scary to see no end in sight for things to change before it gets dangerous.I also didnt realize when I was working and had insurance how lucky I was.I assumed there were programs and help if you look for those poor who didnt have any.I had no idea there just simply wasnt any.Very naive, but glad it happened.Because instead of being ignorant for life and assuming they are just not finding the right places,I know really how little there is out there for those who are in situations. Thanks!
