I was reading other post and I saw you had said that caffein is ok before pre-op? I have been drinking 2 cups of coffee a day.  My surgery is March 5th.  Can I continue to drink coffee or should I stop now. Also does caffein effect the liver before surgery?

I'm not an RD, but a former coffee consumer. If you tend to suffer from caffeine withdrawal headaches (you get that killer headache when you don't have coffee), then weaning yourself off of caffeine/stopping before surgery is probably best. Dealing with one of those headaches post-op would really be awful. It will also depend on what your surgeon's rules are regarding consumption of caffeine post-op. If you're not supposed to have caffeine in the immediate post-op period, then cut back now so you don't have withdrawal later. Just my 2 cents.

Amy, As previously stated, if you drink 1-2 cups of coffee per day pre-op I believe that is a reasonable amount.  I would ask your surgeon what his/her restrictions are regarding caffeine pre and post-op.  Most people believe that caffeine products are too dehydrating, but in moderation I believe they are fine.   In terms of caffeine and the liver, there are no ill effects. Hope that helps.
