I am having the VSG next month. I know that every doctor recommends a certain amount of protein per day and I know its around 70 grams.. my question is.....how much is too much? I know too much protein is not good for ones body...so if I ate 100+ grams...would that be too much?  thanks

Hello Lisa, i am not a dietician. although i have done some research in this area with protein. Yes ....too much protein can harm us. if you drink coffee , coffee robs calcium as well you are correct.    60 - 80 grams of protein a day is perfect. i don't recommend you going above this number. only because higher protein will start to rob calcium from your bones and body. in which then you will start to have problems. its best to stay about 60 - 80 grams of protein per day. no more then that. It helps if you drink your water to flush out your system. this keeps everything moving well and keeps your bones and body hydrated. good luck to you with your journey hugss Lizzy

I have to disagree with the previous writer. The amount of protein that is "too much" varies from person to person and is related to your kidney function.  There is a huge number of people that are promoting the myth that too much protein causes bodily harm.  It is not true and I challenge anyone to give me data to prove me wrong. I do not know of any documented case where kidney failure was attributed to protein excess alone - or there would be a whole lot of bodybuilders on dialysis. What is a good amount of protein for you?  Talk to your doctor and dietitian - they will give you guidelines that you should follow.
