Hey nutrition folks. I was wondering if you could help me? I am 3 months out this week and am having trouble with being extremely weak. I have lost 63 lbs as of today. I had a stricture dilated x 2. But have been fine since the last dilation. I have never been able to eat more than 2-3 bites of food without having to stop b/c I feel full.  This week it's harder than ever to eat b/c every bite of food I take protein wise makes me nauseous. Just one bite and I have to lay down for the nausea to pass. I can drink protein shakes fine but not solid food.  I can eat carbs fine. Like pretzels. They go down ok.  I am getting over bronchitis. About 2 weeks ago I needed a shot of steroids for asthma flare, and have been on antibiotics.  The intolerance to protein started after I got sick. Mentally I am very depressed b/c I have not been able to eat much at any one sitting. I feel like I will never be able to eat much food again.  Now since I have been sick with bronchitis I just cannot eat solid protein and it worries me that I am not getting many calories in daily. I'm lucky to get 500-600 cals a day.   I get my vits every day and my most recent labs were normal.  I did have to get some IV fluids in the ER last Friday b/c I was dehydrated and I felt pretty good all weekend. But today I am just really profoundly weak. Any advice?  I do not have a good dietician to discuss this with and any advice would be appreciated.  Thanks. Maggie Bradley

Dear Maggie, It's not unusual for you to feel weak - you are getting over an illness, for one. You also have asthma & have been on antibiotics. You are also 3 months post-op. It's normal that you can only eat 1-3 oz of food. That's the size of your pouch. You need work on getting your fluid - it's so very important. You also need some help with meal planning. And, yes, you should seek the advice of a dietitian. If you are unhappy with the dietitian who works with your surgeon, then you can look for a dietitian in your area that is not associated with your surgeon. Go to www.eatright.org. Go to : find a dietitian and fill in your information. The website will list dietitians in your area. When you call for an appointment, ask if the dietitian has experience with RNY clients. Or, you can look on the OH website - above it says- find a : -- choose 'other professional' and search for a dietitian in your area. Or, check out one of the on-line dietitian services. Looks like you need solid 1:1 advice, likely too detailed to tackle in this forum. However, there are some awesome post-op people on this site that may be able to help you based on their personal experience. Good luck.

Hello Maggie, I'm so sorry to hear you're going through a tough spell.  I just wanted to add how important drinking your water is to your health.  I'm going through treatment for thyroid cancer and some days I feel like my arms and leggs are leaded down.  Then I realize...I'm not drinking enough water!  Sure enough, If I can keep up my water, I tend to feel better. Sip, sip, sip. Blessings for good health and recovery for you. Edi
