Hi, I am 4 months post VSG and have a question about diet.  I have been told to follow the following guidelines :-

800 - 100 calories

70 grams protein

30 grams fat

40 grams fibre.

Can anyone tell me if this is correct? I have trouble keeping my carbs under 40 grams (although no trouble with the others), and my weight is coming off at a crawl!!  It is so frustrating and I am wondering if perhaps I am  doing something wrong?  Thanks in advance for any input, it is much appreciated.   xoxo  Mel

Hi Mel.  I'm not a dietitian, but I see a couple of problems.  A gram of protein has 4 calories, a gram of carbs has 4 calories, and a gram of fat has 9 calories.  So, what you have listed only comes to 710 calories.  Also, you're counting fiber, not carbs.  Fiber is found in carbs in different amounts.  In other words, 40 grams of fiber will have more than 40 grams of carbs.  In order to get at least 800 calories, you would need to increase carbs from 40 to 63, which would give you 802 calories. I use www.myfitnesspal.com to track my calories, protein, fat, and carbs.  Your goals for protein and fat look good to me, as they're the same as mine, but my goal for carbs is higher than 63.   I had the RNY, am 61 years old, and unable to exercise because of arthritis and chronic pain, so what's good for me may not be good for you.  As I said, I'm not a dietitian, so I hope one of them will give you their opinion. Best wishes on your weight loss journey.

You're very welcome, Mel.  I'm always glad to share what I've learned and what works for me.  I'm still hoping a dietitian will respond to your question. Blessings,

When we estimate a person's calories, we look at : diet history, medications, past medical history, exercise history, weight loss history, to name a few. If you are seeking the advice of a dietitian, than he or she will have estimated your calories based on all the elements. I do not have nearly enough information to tell you if he/she has estimated your calories correctly. If you are not getting this information from a dietitian, it would be in your best interest to seek the advice of a dietitian as calorie calculations are very, very individualized.
