Ferrous Fumarate & ascorbic acid I found finally. Is it ok to take high potency iron coated tablets ? I had been taking a chewable...samples from the nutritionist. I could not find ferrous fumarate anywhere. Any other suggestions or can anyone else let me know what you all have been taking please. THANK YOU !

It may not say ferrous fumerate - it may just say iron fumerate or Femiron  or ferro-sequels (this one has a stool softener in it too) Iron also comes in iron gluconate, iron sulfate (most common) and iron polysaccharide. The ascorbic acid (vitamin C) can be taken separately - 200 mg is the recommended dose to go with your iron to increase absorption.  Meat protein also helps with iron absorption. Take your iron separate from Calcium or zinc by at least 2 hours Don't have coffee or tea at the same time as your iron

Hello Danielle,  Should vit. C be taken by all wls patients with their iron, it wasn't on my list? should we take more during the day? Is any type better (i.e.- with ester)?   I picked up "Chewable Oranges & C' at Trader Jo's, it is made with whole oranges and bioflavonoids.  Ingredients: ascorbic acid & sodium ascorbate, citrus bioflavonoids complex, sucrose, dextrates, vegetable stearate, natural orange flavor, annatto, orange juice concentrate. Does that look good?  also, if taken, how many mcg's of Biotin would you reccomend? Thanks for your help, Jo

Vitamin C is not always on the recommended vitamin list, but it is always mentioned when a person's iron levels drop! In my opinion, it's a good idea for everyone to take extra vit C & Bs - and they're water soluble so minimal risk of over-doing it. The Trader Joe's vitamins are a good choice - and they are very reasonably priced. As far as Biotin, I don't recommend it - there's not enough data out there, in my opinion, to support its use.  It is a relatively safe supplement, so I don't discourage it either.
