Weight Training Question

I just had my 10 week visit to the dr and nut.  Everything is going quite well, and I've lost 52 lbs.  But, I've lost too much muscle, so my nut wants me to increase my protein and do weight training -- all I do right now is walking.  So, I thought I would buy some ankle weights - 5 lbers - to help when I walk.  Then I thought, if that works, why not just wear the ankle weights all the time.  Would it be like an all-day work out?  Does anyone know?

That will help but,  though you might be at a greater risk of injuring your lower muscles. You need to get the other muscle groups involved too...like your core (abs, back) and your upper body.  Believe it or not I am certified trainer for older adults...should be working on all muscle groups to strenghten muscles to support your bones.  Also you'll have fewer skin problems with doing strength conditioning and weight training than if you didn't.  I don't know how old you are, but muscle mass also helps to protect the skeleton: back injury, hip fractures, etc as you get older. Loss of muscle mass does things like lead to fracture hips, spinal abnormalities, etc.  Stability balls are great to do exercise with because it helps with balance and even if doing your upper body you will be working your lower body trying to balance on the ball.  They are a very inexpensive tool and much more fun than walking with weights all day on your ankles.  My senior class we use the ball and bands to do strength training...they enjoy it very much.

Thanks, I appreciate the feedback.  I'm 54 and have arthritis in my knees -- although my knees don't hurt now as much as they used to.  But I am worried about the loss of muscle mass, so I will try other things.   Beth
