Hi Everyone, My LAP RNY surgery is on 12/18 and I am just trying to prepare the have the most appropriate foods for when I come home. I have a very good idea of what to have (im not totally in the dark) but i want to know what the best things/most important you would recommend.Like what is the best protein powder to get? also, can I drink Vanilla Soy Milk, or just regular? Can i have scrambled eggs, or just poached? To me all the above are good foods, but its like I know so many foods and I want to see what you would all say are "THE BEST, MOST IMPORTANT" for when I get home! Thanks so much for any input! Kelly

The best protein powder is the one YOU LIKE. In the past 4 years I've tried A LOT.  You can spend a little or a lot. I have used GNC 100% Whey for a while then I couldn't stand it any more. I've used Designer Whey, EAS, Body Fortress, others that are sold at Sam's, WalMart, GNC. What you need to look for is LOW CARB, LOW SUGAR and that TASTE GOOD TO YOU. That is the BEST. I would think and egg is an egg but I could be wrong. Every doc is different some will have you on liquid for a few weeks othes not. I cane home and was able to eat SOFT Foods from day 1 in the hospital.  I would also have SF pudding you can put protein powder in that also and SF yogurt as well. THE BEST AND MOST IMPORTANT is get your liquids in and try to get some protein in. Rest and WALK you are having MAJOR SURGERY even though it's LAP.  Good Luck,  Robin

Try to buy small samples if you can, so you're not stuck with a lot of something you don't like.  Also, be prepared for the fact that your tastes may change after surgery!  I know a lot of folks who found protein shakes they loved before surgery, and afterwards they couldn't stand them.   My approach was to buy single/sample packets of a variety of liquid protein supplements so I had things to try after I came home from surgery.  Unfortunately, I couldn't stand any of them, so wound up using No Sugar Carnation Instant Breakfast - it was the only liquid protein I could get down.  I supplemented it with non-fat powdered milk to get in more protein.  While CIB is definitely not the best nutritional choice, it got me through!   Good luck preparing for your surgery - it's a wild and rewarding ride!
