Sugar alcohols are not really classified as sugars as they are metabolized more slowly than regular sugars and are not completely absorbed.  They also don't raise blood sugar as quickly as does regular sugar.  However, the biggest drawback for many WLS patients (as well as those without WLS) is the unpleasant side effect of dumping and/or diarrhea.  Some patients can tolerate small amounts without the side effects while others have horrible diarrhea after eating a very small amount.  As with everything, individual tolerances vary widely. To answer the last part of your question, count the sugars.
