My surgeon only requires liquids one day prior to surgery, but after reading other's stories it sounds like a good idea to do this a week or two out. Is there any reason - health, safety - that I should not attempt to do two shakes and a small meal each day instead of my usual routine?

For a regular person with no contraindicating medical condition, I would say, no problem.
If you are preparing for surgery, you may wish to speak with your surgeon and/or anaesthesiologist to see if they have any problem with it. Typically they are more concerned about herbs or medications that may influence bleeding/clotting.
Generally speaking, a diet of two shakes and a small meal, for a short period of time is not a problem. Long term a plan like this could be nutrient deficient.
Good luck!
