I'm 3 weeks out from surgery and I have some questions on what I'm eating. I was on my liquid diet for about 1 week and then my surgeon told me to go to a soft diet for about a week and then start to slowly add solid foods to my diet. So I did about a week of soft foods and started trying solids. I think the reason that he suggested trying some solids a week early was because I was doing so good with everything and had no problems with any food.  I've been trying solid foods for about a week now and  I feel great. But the more I think about it the more I think I might be eating to much. Today for lunch I had about 5oz of grilled chicken and a few bites of green beans. I even had a couple bites of a wheat roll. I had no problems and I felt satisfied.  I will tell you that I am a big guy, not just heavy but tall. 6'4" and I'm naturally bilt like a linebacker. I was wondering if that had anything to do with it. Maybe the surgeon made my pouch a little bigger than the most, even though he said he was not going to, and maybe the opening to the top and bottom of my pouch is naturally bigger than most. I'm also very young, 24. With all this together, am I still eating to much? I would like a real dietitian to answer my questions but any comments are welcome. Thanks

Go ahead and post your comment as a new topic. Sometimes when you post in the "ask a dietitian" topic, the messages get lost in here & we don't always see them. Just cut & paste this into a new topic & one of us 'real dietitians' will comment soon. Thanks!!

Can you tell me ways to prevent weight gain after RNY, I heard that it becomes inevitable, even when sticking to a proper diet. Is this true? If I had RNY and ate my protein and made wise choices, didn’t graze or convert back to bad habits, will I eventually gain weight? Will I have to eat less and less as the years go by to maintain what I lost? Please explain this to me. Also, are nutritional deficiencies possible for someone who gets annual blood work, takes their vitamins, minerals and protein intake? I fear that because I'm so young, that if I have RNY I'll develop nutritional deficiencies one day, possibly even major ones. Is that a more likely outcome for younger people?

I had  my upper GI series done today because my Dr was concerned why I went from 0 hunger level to hunger all the time. Found out my pouch is fine is about the size of a large egg but the exit to my stomach is dialated to the size of my intestinal opening (about the size of a jumbo hotdog) in diamiter. I meet with my Dr again on Friday but am concerned ....Has this happened to anyone else? I know I need to have another surgery to fix the problem but not sure of what options I have . I originally went to the dr to discuss revision thats when we found out it may be something else other than my pouch.  I would like to go to the Dr with at least knowing what options are available so I dont just pick the 1st one. Please help....!!!  I also need help know what I should eat until I meet with the Dr on Friday so ther opening doesnt dialate any farther.  PLEASE HELP!! MaryTeresa (Proud mom of 2 boys)

I am anemic so I have to take Folic Acid and Iron shots all the time, however , I am also epileptic and as a medical student I found out yesterday that folic acid counter acts the anti covulsive meds that would explain why they never work. Is there any way nutrition wise once you have had RNY to get the levels of vitamins I need and still not have it counter act my anti convulsive meds?
