Are liquid diets only good for you if the docotor says they are and if only before surgery?

There are many types of liquid diets out there.  There are medically supervised programs, like Medifast.  There are also OTC versions of liquid diets that are common in heath food stores. These are difficult diets and success is usually better in the supervised programs.  It's a good idea to check with your doctor before starting any diet or exercise program. An all liquid diet is possible and in some of my hospitalized patients we will feed them through a tube directly into their stomach or intestines.  This is obviously not the standard type of liquid diet, but people are maintained on this type of nutrition for years with no adverse effects. Liquid diets pre-op are common in order to get a high amount of weight loss in a short period of time, but they are certainly not done exclusively as a pre-operative plan.
