I am almost 3 weeks post op and taking 1000 mcg of B-12 ( one tab dissolved under tongue) daily. I am reading on the boards that some are taking one every other day or once a week. Am I taking too much? Also.. my Doc didn't mention anything about taking an iron supplement. Should I be concerned about that?  My mulit does not contain iron.  Thanks in advance, Marianne C.

Hi, You NEED to take your B12 at least weekly. Many take it daily - B12 is not toxic and won't harm you to take daily. I personally think it's better to take more B12 than not enough. I tell my patients to take it daily, then, if they forget a day or if they go on vacation and forget to take it along, no big deal. Regarding Iron, yes, you do need iron. Try to find an Iron Citrate, it's absorbed better and doesn't produce as much constipation. I have seen it on occasion at pharmacies, but, I know for sure Iron Citrate can easily be found on-line by multiple carriers. Follow the directions on the bottle for dosing. If you can't find Iron Citrate, any other Iron supplement (most common is Iron Sulfate) can be taken. But, yes, you do want to take Iron. Espically since you are a woman. You should also be taking Calcium - has your doctor recommended that for you? If not, again, you want to take Calcium Citrate - more commonly found. Be sure you are not taking your Calcium and Iron together. If you take your Calcium in the morning, take your iron at night time. Hope that helps ... let me know if you have additional questions. :) Sara Nejat-Bina, RD eNutritionCare.com

Thank you Sara!  Ok will definitely continue to take my B-12 daily. It's good to know that I can't overdose on it.  I wondered about that Iron thing and why my Doc doesn't have me on it. I will go look at Bariatric Advantage and see what they have for Iron Citrate. I bet they have a good one. I do take Calcium Citrate that I get from Bariatric Advantage. I get my multi from them as well. I am taking 400 MG's three times a day spread out and not with my other vitamins.  Oh dear.... thunder and lighting.. gotta turn off the computer. Tampa is the lighting capital of the world!   Later! Marianne C

Bariatric Advantage does have it. I've referred many people to them. :)
