Nutritional Guidelines

Only your surgeon/NUT can give you proper guidelines. Because we all have different amounts of our intestines (proximal/distal) bypassed our nutritional requirements are different. Also surgeons have preferences of what they like (and dont like) their patients to eat. i.e. My surgeon bypasses on the lower side.. I am to eat 900-1100 calories a day... a person who has more bypassed is eating 1200-1500 calories a day at a little over 1 year out.  Always listen to what your surgeon/NUT says and stick with that... you will get a million different answers here on OH about whats required nutritionally.

Hello Jennifer, In case it wasn't obvious, these answers are coming from NUTs or better Registered Dietitians. I hear what you are saying that a person's surgeon should be the final answer on nutrition questions.  I think it is clear in our answers that we defer to the surgeon's recommendations.   Unfortunately, in some parts of the country there is limited support from Dietitians (or NUTs if you prefer).  Some physicians don't use them, others don't have RDs available, and some have dietitians with limited experience in WLS. I have heard from so many people that they received limited or NO information on their diet post-op.  Each individual who has had WLS has their own unique experiences, but also some commonalities to others.  Some of the benefits of belonging to a support community such as this is to get answers, information, and opinions.  While we recognize that some of the information isn't "hard" science, we can appreciate the value of sharing various perspectives.  While moderating this board, we are hoping to dispel some of the myths and misinformation and provide useful guidelines for those on their journey to a healthier weight. If we say something that you don't agree with, let us know.  But try to recognize what we are trying to accomplish. Regards, Danielle Halewijn RD eNutritioncare.com

No it wasnt 'obvious'... and I do recognize what is trying to be accomplished by OH as a whole. Yesterday was the first time I came to this forum and after this, it will be my last!

Please, wait! I was the first to post to KyKy a few days ago. I never disagreed with your advise. One SHOULD follow the advise of their surgeon first, and the dietitian or nutritionist working with their surgeon second. I did mention that in my first post. Everyone on OH is trying to help each other. My advise may be different than the advise you hear from your dietitian or nutritionist. Everyone has their opinion. I'm sure you've heard different things from many different people. EveryBODY reacts differently to WLS so there is no true standard for how to eat after surgery. We are all just doing our best to give the best information. Danielle was not trying to offend you - just point out that Kyky was getting advise from a RD - Registered Dietitian. Basically that means we have passed state boards where a nutritionist likely has not. A RD has at least a bachlor's degree & completed an intership where a nutritionist completes a 6-month certificate program. I will always sign my name with RD behind it so OH members know they are getting recommendations from someone who has actually studied this stuff. Please don't be offended and please continue to cruise this forum. I've read many of your other comments - you comments can be very helpful. Sorry for the confusion and/or hurt feelings. I just want to say I just recently found this forum.  I didn't know it was here.  Someone on another forum mentioned it.  It's been a godsend!!  I have more questions than my surgeon's office has time to answer, and I'm sure I'm like a lot of people - I just don't ask the question.
