Too Much Protien?
Wow, I didn't know this board was here, I'm so happy to have found it!!
OK, Let me say first that I SHOULD know this being 7 years out and 168 pounds down, but I've actually done fine with all of my blood wor****il now so I know my eating has been sufficient for getting what I need. My June draw, however found me having an iron level (Hb) 10.6 where it should be 12-15, so, I'm rethinking my nutrition strategy. I've heard this can happen the further out that you get from WLS. Also, I'm scheduled to have my Abdominoplasty this coming Wed, and I'm hoping my iron won't deter it (I just had my pre op labs drawn yesterday).
I guess my most pressing question right now would be how much protien is enough/too much as far as suppliments go? I'm going to have to really step it up after my TT to promote healing, and I was told it wouldn't be easy to eat like normal for a while, so it's back to the powder. The stuff I got yesterday is 24 grams per serving.
I would SO appreciate any input... I love this site!!
Hi!
Well, a supplement with 24 g is great -- does it taste good?
At 168 lbs & planning for major surgery, your protein goal from food & supplements should be around 90 g per day. You don't have to get a perfect 90 g --- just somewhere around there.
Congrats on 7 years !! That's fantastic!
Regarding your Hb -- do you take Iron supplements? If not, consider starting as Iron is malabsorbed with a RNY.
With upcoming surgery, don't get upset if your Hb does drop -- the docs will be giving you lots of fluids and you will bleed during surgery -- kinda hard not to see the Hb drop. Discuss with your doc though as a low Hb can make you feel lethargic & worn out -- not a good feeling after at TT -- ya know.
Good luck!!
When my friend had her TT her PS specifically stated pre and post-op how much protein she needed.
As for how much is enough/too much it varies by person, surgery and how much you had bypassed. If you have a surgeon/NUT I would consult them as to what you should be getting on a normal basis... the PS can answer about immediately pre and post op.

I am just one month, one week after surgery and still on pureed food. I have already lost 26 lbs and am doing well. It certainly is tough learning how to eat and consume the amount of recommended protein. I am already quite sick of the protein supplement drinks - they are begining to make me nauseous. Any ideas about how to consume so much protein and not feel ill?
I am 3 months out and at this point don't drink shakes, just protein rich food: low fat cheddar cheese melted on 1/2 slice of whole grain bread, plain yogurt (organic), chicken breast, low fat cheese sticks with 3 multi-grain crackers, homemade chili, low fat hamburger. Eat low fat and eat very slow with small bites. Keep a record of everything you put in your mouth, ie, water, supplements, food (protein and calories). I also eat a small amount of cantaloupe or fresh peaches per day, once again chew, chew, chew. I still use shakes once in awhile but add milk instead of water and about 1/4 of a banana with ice and it isn't that bad. I have just added Breyers sugar free, low fat ice cream as a treat at night. It gets better as time passes. But keep track of everything.
Good luck.
