That would be Dr Ellsmere in Halifax that does the surgery here in NS.

A few of us didn't want to wait 10 plus years and travelled to Mexico to have it done, it cost roughly 6100 with the flight, you can claim this on income tax.

Hi there,

Thanks for the suggestion.  Good idea and very appropriate as I've been a diabetic myself for a number of years, though well controlled now through the weight loss and diet.  I've had a couple of responses from ladies who said they knew someone who might be interested.  I sent off replies to them both but if I don't hear back by early next week I will give the Diabetic Association a call.  Thanks again.

Topic: RE: Surgery booked for April 24
Thank You everyone for the support  My surgery was changed to May 8th cause my doctor isn't available next week, which is ok cause it is only put over for 2 more weeks, I look forward to meeting anyone who wants to meet me it would be nice to have new people in my life, we have been here for just over a year and a half and haven't really made any friends, I have never met a town so against outsiders in my life. I am sorry for those of you who are still waiting for an appt. I got my appt. with the Dr. for my sever acid reflux and he has to go in to do some work to repair the damage that has been done, so he said he is gonna be in there anyways so while he is he is doing the bypass, this way less surgeries. Plus I have been on this journey since 2009 yes it was in Ontario but I had already done all testing that is required prior to the surgery so I think that also helped me. I am not on here to make enemies I came back on to OH to talk to people who have been through this, With being beat down cause I got an early surgery date, I have no been comming back here, I found a page on Facebook with people from NS who have had the surgery or are getting it, they have been awsome and are very friendly and not once was I asked why you and not me!!!!!!! Like I said I appreciate everyone on here who has been supportive  and friendly. If you would like to chat please add me on Facebook my name is Carole Boyer Schleihauf and I look forward to chatting with you and hopefully meeting in the future.
Thank You Again
Carole

Hi Bright eyes,

So glad to hear you are booked for surgery.  I had it done in august of last year and it was a piece of cake, pardon the pun!!  I had no difficulties whatsoever and I've been loosing steadily since then. I have not had a particularly fast weight loss, but I am happy with what's happening.

As to the waiting period, the number and type of health problems you have and things like your age are taken into account.  From the time of my initial referral to the surgery date was about 3 years. Of course, I'm now a 'slighly senior citizen'so I think that helped me.

Good luck and before you know it you will be joining us on the losers' bench.

Hi,

I just cleaned out my closet too.  If you don't get any takers for the clothes, call the Diabetic Association. They have a clothesline program and at least here in Cape Breton, they will come and pick up the clothes. They then resell them at Vallue Village to raise money for the Diabetic Ass'n.  It's worth a call anyway.

Hi Kentville,

You may have more luck going through the New Brunswick forum as that type of surgery is performed in New Brunswick. I don't believe it is being done here in Nova Scotia at all. I know I had the Vertical sleeve Gastrectomy here in Halifax last summer. My understanding is that it is the only type of WLS performed here.

Hi Jalara,
You will find all info on the NS Obesity Network Website http://www.cdha.nshealth.ca/obesity-network  there you will find the consult download for the consult form as well as all information you need about the Weight Loss Program.

There is a long wait list. The program is a good one and does teach you many things needed in this journey before WLS.
Good luck as your journey begins, and if you have any questions don't hesitate to ask. I once was super morbidly obese at 600 pounds...I've been there. I remember when my legs swelled so much and the would split and seep. I had high blood pressure and diabetes/ insulin dependant.

Hi everyone! I'm from NS and I've been to my doc 3 times about my weight. I am beyond morbidly obese. And I've been big since I was a little girl.

In January I started noticing that I am retaining fluid in my legs and my BP is creeping up quickly. I'm 31.

So today I saw my doc again and she said I'm not trying hard enough. She wouldn't refer me anywhere or even offer me any help herself. She said if I want to see someone I have to find a name and contact info and she will write the referral.

I was wondering is anyone could help me out? Point me in the direction of anyone in NS I could see for help? She told me I have a week.

Thanks in advance!

Topic: RE: I WROTE THIS TO THE HALIFAX DAILY NEWS TODAY
Congratulations on your weightloss success Robert.  It is alot of hard work even with whatever tool we are able to get.

Yes Doc MacDonald use to be the bariatric surgeon for NS, and did retire but i believe he is in Amherst n sees a few patients there.

The Nova Scotia Weight Loss Program which is funded by the government is in Halifax and is what one must go through before approval for bariatric surgery covered by MSI. The surgery now covered by MSI is the VSG... the "sleeve". There is a very, very long wait list for the program... due to the low funding given by government.

I totally agree that the NS government needs to wake up. Obesity is on the climb... yet somehow obesity carrys a stigma n hence gets put on the wayside. Doesn't make sense that alcoholics and gamblers get help but somehow obese people have very little to none. A much more health crunch can flood the health care system if obesity is not addressed n taken care of... does this really bode well for Nova Scotia?
