It's prescription only. My endocrinologist prescribed it for me last year. I also tried Belviq months before deciding on WLS. Belviq did nothing for me. At least the Qsymia made me feel not hungry all of the time. The side effects were rough though - extreme constipation. So get your Miralax ready if you're going to try it :) Best of luck, Dawn! xoxo

Is the prescription or over the counter?
I've done several different pills...bottom line...I just ate around them! They'd help a little, but in the long run, like others have said, just not effective. Best of luck to you...but I've discovered (finally) is that you really do have to make a life style change (I hate that phrase!) and stop looking at food as a "pleasure" item. You only need it to sustain yourself...not indulge all the time. Only took me 60 years to figure it out!!
Hi Nadine, welcome
From what I have seen on various forums and different weight loss groups I've been in, the more a person has to loose, the faster it comes off at first with even minimal changes. it can do A LOT for confidence and motivation seeing those initial losses.
when you log your food, I'd check out if there's a pie chart or a bar graph where you can see the patterns in your eating. what is something that can be worked on first- are the carbs out of control, the sugar, or eating relative fine overall but too much volume? pick one aspect, and replace or reduce.
typically this works well for a while, and when your weight comes down, it gets more fine tuned and a little more effort is required.
as for WLS- emotional eating could indeed sabotage it, which is why its good to work with a therapist in tandem with any weight loss attempts, but especially surgery. I'm not sure what options you may have under "Obama care" but I have heard coverage is subsidized for low and no income individuals.
me, I am going to mexico for my surgery, next month $4600. I took a loan from my 401k, worth it.
I sent you a friend request on here best of luck- stay positive, look at all your options, and don't give up!
I was on a medical weight loss program at a clinic that prescribed Phentermine. I did lose some weight, but the efficacy of the pill only lasts a couple months, so when it wore off my appetite returned and so did the weight- plus some.
A lot of people are having great success with Qsymia. I was not one of them. I lost maybe 10 lbs...Good luck!

Hi there! I have been prescribed several different weight loss medicines and none of them have worked. The worst was adipex. It made my blood pressure sky rocket and gave me massive headaches. Mostly, what I noticed concerning the medicines and the programs I've tried, is that they worked while I was on them, but as soon as I came off of them the weight just piled back on.
Of course, everyone reacts differently to different things, but the medicines just weren't for me.
I hope things work out well for you!!!
Edited for typos.
HI All!
I've been there and done it all! What are my next steps?
Has anyone been prescribed a drug for weight loss? Did it work?
Many Thanks!!
Hi Nadine, sounds as if you are off to a good start to have begun losing!! Tracking your food is definitely a good thing; I started using My Fitness Pal over a year ago to track food and exercise. Then my son and daughter-in-law gave me a FitBit which syncs with MFP so that simplifies it some. You can add recipes to MFP and so forth to make it more user-friendly, but mainly remember to really be careful to use exact measurement / dry and liquid / in order for it to be accurate...and you can add friends on the site as well as peruse their forums.
My niece had RNY surgery last January and was able to do so thru Medicaid or Medicare, not sure which. She was unemployed at the time, so that may be an option for you if you decide to pursue WLS.
Best of luck to you, and in the words of Winston Churchill, never surrender, never give up!
