Topic: I'M BACK....to OH board and WW!
I've been missing for a long time....lurking on occasion.  I felt really motivated to see Lori and Christa and Holly back on again.  Have been trying (unsuccessfully) every diet under the sun for the last couple of years and recently motivated by a good friend who is seeing great results with WW.  Of course WW and I have a past history.....first started in 1968 and many, many times since.  I swore I would never join again...but here I am.

To reiterate for those who don't know me....I'm 63, retired nurse and been obese all of my life and morbidly so for the past 25 years or so.  My age and my weight have finally caught up with me and I need a total knee replacement, but my doctor wants me to get down to 200lb before he'll do it.  So my only form of exercise is water aerobics and I've been sporadic at best with that until just recently.

I think where I've failed with WW in the past is using my points for the wrong choices.  This time I'm combining the point system with healthy choices (whole grains, lean protein, fruits and veggies) and hoping (correction, planning) on making my goal!!  I have joined WW once again because I need the accountability of facing that scale every week (with someone besides myself knowing the results).  Have returned to the OH board, as I know this can be a great support system and gives me even greater accountability.....depending on you all to keep me honest.

I've always wanted the "quick fix" (don't we all?) and determined this time to be satisfied with consistent results no matter how slow.  After all, a loss of 1lb/week still equals 50lb less at the end of the year, and who of us wouldn't want to weigh 50lb less?

It's time to eat healthy, get rid of some of these medications I'm on and prolong my life!!!

This is a great post today - so many people here have done things towards improving their health - smart decisions. I find reading this so inspirational.

DH is feeling a little better so we walked our 5 miles at a much brisker speed. I was so full of sweat and I don't like having sweat running down me - sort of feels disgusting. So I carried some paper towels in my bag and used them to dry myself off near the end - hopefully no one saw, I went into a quiet hallway to do it. I figure if it's cold in the mall, which it was, and I'm sweating like a pig, then I must be making progress and getting a good cardiac workout.

I'm also thinking that I need to get my Wi fit up and going - I bought it a long time ago and have never used it - my goal is to sometime this week figure out how to turn it on and use it. I promise by this weekend I will have used my Wi fit and I'll report back here on my experience. I will use it instead of letting the cats sleep on it. LOL

Hi choose2inspire, we're happy to have you join us.

WOW- you've been through 2 bands - that's a lot of surgery on your poor stomach. If nothing else I would think you need to allow your stomach to heal before jumping into another surgery. I think you're wise about not having the RNY and giving yourself time to take another route. You must be so upset and frustrated with that whole experience. As for WLS - that is huge business for hospitals and doctors - not just in the surgery itself but everything else related to it - so yes it is a bariatric mill even if your doctor is genuinely a nice and caring person. It's just the reality of the way medicine is practiced today.

I think you're lucky, you have some wonderful Dr.s who are supporting you in shedding your weight. I have recently, after giving it lots of thought, realized that making profound and permanent changes in your diet is the only way to go - and these changes are for life, not just to shed the weight. There is nothing wrong with your digestive tract, it's in your head in the choices you make to eat. Even our drive for hunger is more about the choices of food that we eat. I think in the long run, if you can shed the weight with a fully intact and functioning digestive tract, then you are better off. The only thing WLS does offer is faster weight loss early out but it comes with a heavy price for some people.

All of us here want to share this journey with you so I look forward to your postings - the good, the bad and the ugly - we can kick you back on the wagon when you need and cheer you on when you're doing well.

"These lifestyle changes are the same ones I'd have to make with or without RNY in order to maintain a healthy lifestyle and weight loss."

There, you hit the nail on the head.  I think we all realize that surgery is just an assist and unless we get all our mess straightened out we'll be right back where we started so why not try it without the surgery first.  I figure I'd have to do the work at some point anyway so why not just do it without all the added complications that come with having WLS.  Stay focused and you can do it.  Good luck.

I'm in the process of changing my diet, relationship with food and my lifestyle.  I'm in training for maintaining.

This is one area I have a problem with only because I don't eat any animal products AND I don't eat any added fats or oils. So basically what the average person were to serve me at a dinner party - well much of it I can't eat. I always bring a dish with me - enough to share with others. I discuss it with the hostess before hand because I don't want to obnoxious and just show up with stuff - I try to bring it as a friendly addition in the way that others bring a bottle of wine. I also eat before I leave the house so I'm not too hungry. I also don't want a hostess to go out of their way to accommodate me - I'd rather they make the food that they want to make. It's a tricky situation.

The problem is do I even want to take stuff on my plate - I mean what do I do with it, I'm not going to put any of it my mouth - but I can push the food around with my fork on my plate which makes me feel guilty. I had serious health problems before going on my diet and I firmly believe the changes are only due to strict adherence to my diet because goodness knows all the medication I was on wasn't helping. So I don't cheat on my diet, even at a dinner party.

Mostly I make a point to talk to everyone and make my experience about being with others and not about my food and what I eat.

well, i love to shop, so i have decided that every 20 pounds i lose i'm going to buy myself something really nice.  my 1st big goal is to fit into a plane seat by october since i'm going to ireland and don't really want to pay for an extra seat (very expensive) but i think that if i can lose 50 pounds by then (6 months, i think it's do-able) i don't think they'll make me pay, i hope not anyway!!  thanks for the support, i'm gonna need it!!

AB - please come and post regularly so you can share your journey with us - the good, the bad and the ugly.

I know many people including Moosie had done extremely well with WW. And as Gloop points out this is not a "DIET to lose weight" this is about a lifestyle that you will maintain even after you've lost the weight. I'm glad to read that you've joined a gym too - clearly you are making a smart effort.

Do you have some small goals to reach for in the beginning? I found it helpful to have loads of goals, both actual numbers on the scale as well as things like buckling into the airplane seat strap without needing to add that extra strap. All my goals were meaningful to me but I did have a lot of them so that I constantly felt good about my shedding weight. I had 200 pounds to shed so I didn't want to look at long term goals because they just seemed so far off in the future that it was overwhelmingly depressing. Meeting lots of little goals is much more rewarding and builds self esteem and acts as feedback that you're doing well.
