Holly, if the surgery has worked for you congratulations but the fact is I know as many people who weigh considerably MORE after their surgery than before it as I do folks who have had long term success with the surgery. Long term success can also be attained without surgery with smart eating and smart, targeted exercise. The clinic I go to has medical professionals on staff to help with the mental, physical, and nutritional facets of losing weight. We have a nutritionist that goes over our food diary every month, and I meet with Medical staff every other month. On top of that our clinic has it's own fitness center managed by a young lady with a degree in Kinesiology from IU as well as professional fitness training certifications. If you aren't dealing with all three aspects, then failure is in your future, it's that simple.
Hi all, I'm new to the web site having just wrote a review for the weight loss clinic I attend. Fad diets promise quick and lasting results, but very seldom deliver both. Why? Because weight loss is more than intake and exercise, there is a very real psychological side to it as well, and any program that fails to address all three aspects will never work. for sure you have your weekly meetings but losing weight, especially if you are looking to lose a lot, is a minute by minute, hour by hour, and day by day process that takes discipline (something we all lack to begin with or we wouldn't be in this position in the first place) and requires incredible support. I have lost 80 pounds in the last 18 months and just yesterday completed my first ever 5K. I still have a long way to go but I will get there, and it will be sooner than later. I am open for comments, questions, and discussion so long as it is civil.
yes,we know. That's why most of us here have had weight loss surgery, the only way to achieve long lasting weight loss and maintenance.
Hello All,
As I don't qualify for surgery (besides I'm not brave enough for it), I am hoping to qualify to get the Spatz3 12 month adjustable Gastric Balloon next month.
It has only been approved in Canada since Oct 17 of last year (2017) and there is only one private clinic in Canada that offers it.
There is little info out there on 12 month balloons and most peeps that have had them got the procedure in Mexico, Australia and a few places in Europe. There are FB groups that I've joined for support but wanted to share here also in case there are a few of members here.
If anyone already has experience with this balloon I'd love to hear about it. If you are interested in reading about my journey (I've not even qualified for it yet), I'll be posting on my blog on this site so feel free to click "follow" or whatever the button is to follow someone's blog.
Oct 2018 - Family Dr Referral, Detox Diet
Nov 2018 - Pre-Op Appt (scheduled), Gastric Balloon Insert (TBD)
HW: 272.6 > CW: 229.0 > GW: 120-135
Found this weight loss %age calculator that helps see weight loss in a different perspective, thought I'd share: https://www.fitwatch.com/calculator/weight-loss-percentage/
So I'm tracking my current %age of my goal lost. 100% = 142 lbs to lose. Currently I have lost 43 lbs so that is 43/142 = 30% of my goal - YAY ME!
This is a very hard situation, I don't know what to do when I'm in your shoes. I hope you will find solace from the support of people around you. You can handle it. Try other diet options.

Hi Christineanna1.
I'm taking fitness classes through our local recreation district "Hayward Rec" nearby. The classes take place only a few blocks from where I live. I included a class in general fitness for active adults which is a low-impact course that meets in the morning 3 times a week. I was taking yoga, but developed house maids knee (bursitis in both knees) which made it impossible to kneel on my mat without a whole lot of pain. So, instead of yoga (2 per week), I'm walking with my husband, who also needs to lose weight, 2 to 3 times per week, about 30 minutes each time. We've been going out in the morning before it becomes hot. I think anything that makes me sweat is probably very good for me and will help me continue to take the weight off. I've done aquatic aerobics at our local pool and enjoy it very much and have participated in Zumba (yeaaay!).
I'm a severely obese female, H 5'7", HW 255, but am now steadily losing weight. I'm down 13 pounds in 20 days and have a goal weight of under 160. I need about to take off about 100 pounds. The diet is 1200 to 1550 calories per day of quality food, emphasizing protein: 70 - 100 grams per day, fat: under 60 grams, and carbohydrate: 130 - 160 grams per day and 5 servings of fruits and vegetables. I'm doing the pre-surgery (VSG) vitamin regimen (excepting the extra thiamine) and am starting to feel much better. I don't feel deprived at all. I'm writing everything down in a food log, which I plan to keep doing for the rest of my life. Plus measuring/weighing my portions as I go.
VSG was/is on the horizon and I'll continue to keep my appointments at the bariatric clinic. I have many obesity-related comorbidities. I'm putting off my final decision until just before surgery so I can weigh my options better. VSG is so permanent! And it complicates hydration. I already have problems with swallowing and VSG isn't going to improve that. It'll most likely make that worse. I've named my new diet the "fear-of-the-knife" diet and am pretty sure I can work it into a permanent life style. It's certain that I can't remain at my current weight because it's having such a negative effect on my quality (and quantity) of life.
Staying hydrated is so important. A new habit I'm developing is keeping a water bottle next to me at all times. I take it to the exercise classes and drink a full 16 oz. during the time before, during and after. When I wake up in the morning, I drink 3, 8 oz. glasses of water first thing and write it down in my food log. I'm using a Diet Minder, which has room for 90 days worth of records and it also has space to write down exercise each day. This was/is available on Amazon. I've bought several and usually buy them used, in very good condition and with free shipping to cut costs.
Let's support each other as we press into healthier lives! I noticed that this part of OH is not much frequented...perhaps because of the surging popularity of VSG. Maybe we can get something going here again. Take care!

I don't know of anyone who's had it, but it's been mentioned a few times here on OH.
As I understand it, you basically attach a device to a port in your stomach, and suck the food you've eaten out before it has time to be digested. Some folks have called it "medically assisted bulimia" and I'm inclined to agree with that description.

Do you know anyone who has used it before? Its covered on my insurance, surprisingly. Just wondering how it works, and the pros and cons of it.

This procedure doesn't force you to re-assess your eating habits; I would be very skeptical about the odds for long-term success and maintenance after this surgery.
