Hi All, I'm new here. Here's my story. I was full speed ahead for WLS and was denied because of exclusions. I was crushed. I have BMI in the high 50s and type II diabetes and hypertension and back and hip problems. I'm 47, I feel like I'm 77. I switched insurance companies and as of January 06, I should be covered for WLS, and I can start the process all over again. In the mean time, I started a new food program with a "Diabetes Management Specialist" ...weekly weigh-in, and nutrition counseling for weight loss. I quit smoking a year and a half ago, and even though I started exercising, I gained an enormous amount of weight on top of the enormous amount of weight I was already carrying. Anyway, with this new food program, I've been feeling healthier than I have in a long time. In the first couple of weeks, I was off one of my diabetes meds and my hypertension med. I've lost about 25 pounds in about 6 weeks. I know that's not much, but, for some reason, it feels like more. I'm walking up stairs easier, getting out of breath less often and have been able to increase my swimming to 60 laps a day...I'd been doing 30 laps for about 6 months and now I'm able to double it. (I swim in an indoor pool at an aquatic therapy center very early in the morning, 5 days a week) I can't do the treadmill because of a problem with my heel, so water exercise is my only option at the moment. Anywho......I'm now re-thinking the WLS thing and wondering if I just might be able to do this on my own, without the surgery. I need to lose at least 150lbs. I have doubts, constantly. I know the surgery isn't magic, I know you have to work real hard to get the weight off, but, I'm so tired of being so heavy, and I know the WLS will help get the weight of faster. Is this the ultimate in instant gratification? I'm so damned confused. Anyone want to chime in and give me your thoughts. I'm glad I found this site....it feels right. Laurel

Hi Laurel, I have lost 158 pounds without surgery. It can be done. I am using LA Weight and working out. WLS is faster in the beginning months, but their weight loss slows down also. I think learning to eat nutrious foods, controlling portion sizes, and working out is the healthiest option. I just got back from LA Weight Loss, and the counselor there said that a lady that had WLS a few years back had just joined because she had gained all of her weight back. Good luck with whatever you decide. Lynette
