Good Morning!
Happy St. Patricks Day!
Instead of cornbeef (which is too fatty for my taste) I'm having roast beef with cabbage and red potatoes and 1/2 a bottle of good beer.  I can always find a way to make a meal yummy and less fatty.

Today I'm proud of the simple fact that even though I did not want to go for a walk this morning I decided to push myself...as I was going to put the leash on the dog and open the door the rain started.  I could have said "oh well" but instead I got on the treadmill and did 40 mins indoors.  This is a big deal for me because I've made a million excuses why I don't use the treadmill but not today and you know what, I actually enjoyed it and it brought back good memories of all the mornings I used it while I was working hard to lose my weight.

So my plan is to get back on it tonight and do another 30 mins before dinner and then I'll continue to use it if the weather doesn't allow me to walk outside.

I am going to commit to myself today that I reach 10,000 steps at least 5 days a week if not 6.......not 8,000 steps, not 9,000 but the full 10,000!

That's what I'm proud about this morning.
How about you?

Have a wonderful Weds!

Hi Ruth, I'm heading out the door to visit my local food coop to buy some food in bulk. I ran out of steel cut oatmeal - I like to make a large pot every few days to store in the fridge. This makes a quick breakfast for DH and I because I just take a serving, put it in a bowl and zap it in the microwave and add fruit and stevia. I'm amazed at how much oatmeal we go through. Same thing with popcorn - I buy generic popcorn in bulk too. So not only am I eating healthier but on this diet I'm saving tons of money. A win win situation in my book. LOL

Happy St. Pats - you know they have never heard of corn beef in Ireland - it's an American thing that the poor immigrant Irish when they came to America saw the poor immigrant Jews making corned beef - so they started to eat it too. Most of the Irish left Ireland because they were starving to death during the Potato Famine. Irish peasants ate 5-10 pounds of potatoes a day because that was all they could afford - so they rarely if ever ate meat and never corned beef. When a viru**** and wiped out the potato crop within weeks - these people were left literally starving to death. Sadly Ireland had plenty of meat and grain which they were exporting to England at the time, but peasant's couldn't afford to buy meat or grain so they immigrated, starved to death or barely survived till they could grow other food on their tiny plot of land. Michael Pollen has a great section on this in one of his books (Botany of Desire or something similar, can't remember the exact title) where he talks about potatoes, it was also a PBS TV special a few years ago. When they came to America they lived in the same neighborhoods as immigrant Jews and they were finally able to buy some cheap meat - and well corned beef was cheap. I find things like this so interesting. Enjoy!

Happy St Patricks Day!

Today I got up and made a good breakfast for me and my BF. Normally, I only have a protien shake in the mornings because I have found that it is harder on me to get a full work out in if I eat something solid before the gym. But this morning i took a day off and decided to for go my shake. Instead I sauted some baby bella mushrooms, some onion and some tomato in a skillet, then scrambled some eggs and mixed it all together. Threw it all in a torilla shell with a little hot sauce and it was yummy! I know its not much, but hey, I take every small thing that makes me happy and embrace it! I spent too many years beating myself up for being over weight. Not anymore!! Hope everyone has a great day!!

The egg mix you made is one of my favorites but I use peppers instead of mushroom.  I think I'll have this for dinner tonight...I even have a fajita wrap type thing I can stuff it in.  YUMMY!

It's good that you embrace the small things....better than sweating the small stuff for sure!!!!!
Stay positive it sure helps with staying on track and reaching goal!

I'm a day behind. But on Wednesday the thing I did to make myself proud was increase the incline on the treadmill at the gym. I generally like to stick with the same level for a few weeks to ensure I've 'mastered' it before moving on. It was before I would have considered the level I was at "mastered" but I figured what do i have to lose?!

@ Sklar: cool on the coop shopping. There is a coop near me but I've never been. Thanks for the history lesson in the Irish. I can recall having an extra credit question in school that asked to explain what the potato famine was...I didn't know the answer. I'd heard it had something to do with Ireland but knew little more than that. Where were you 20 years ago? LOL!

@ Ruth: Do you use a pedometer? I've never found one that's accurate- I suspect they tend to be far less accurate the more overweight you are. I gave up on pedometers a long time ago. Have fun making your 10,000 steps!

Congrats on increasing the incline!!!

Yes I do use a pedometer.  Right now I'm using one by WW...it gives me steps and distance and "points" burned (which I try to convert to calories burnt).  I recently found one that does just about everything I want...I'll order it after my surgery when I'm ready to get walking again (may take a while).

I really want one of the "body buggs"......but I don't like the idea of a monthly fee.  I'd like something stand alone.  Sometimes things just get too techie...I'm trying to keep life simple right now.

Have fun

We went out last night and I had preplanned what to get based on where I thought we were going so of course plans changed. I did ok though, I ordered something I wanted but a healthier version, asked them not to put rice on my plate...which they did anyway. But I ate my veg tables first, then my protein-left the rice. I was surprised when I came home and looked up the calorie count that I had made good choices and yet did not feel excluded from the group or that I was starving. However, when they wanted to go get ice cream I thought I did good in ordering a coffee drink...umm nope. I really need a small calorie book or notebook to keep options for different restaurants. The ''coffee'' had more calories than my whole meal!!!

mjgsmom-What type of protein shake do you use? Since I have been keeping up with my food log I'm have noticed I never get the recommended amount of protein. I bought some protein shakes thinking that would be a low calorie way to get the right amount but they all seem to be sweetened with splenda/surcolose whatever they want to call it but it is sugar alcohol and I'm soooo allergic to it. If I drink just a little of something with splenda in it I don't leave the restroom for like two days.

The good news is that now you know the calorie value of that coffee drink so next time you know what to order (or what not to order) so it's a good thing.  :-)

Keep on with the planning. learning, and good decisions!
