My name is Linda. I live in Winnipeg, MB Canada. I'm currently on a very long waiting list for WLS. Since Sept/09 I've managed to lose about 15 pounds. Not a big deal of weight, but when you been over 400 pounds for 20 yrs or so, it's big enough deal for me. I've always been large since a child. To think of me as slim person is very hard to imagine as I always been a large lady. There is nothing wrong with being large, but when your back, knees, feet, ankles have arthritis and you have to use a walker or powerchair to get around, then being large isn't fun. BTW I have diabetes, HBP and sleep apnea too. I want to lose the weight slowly and my goal for 2010 is to get to 350 pounds by the end of the year. Boy, Linda doesn't set long term goals? Yes it is a short term goal, but I rather have shorter goals than a big one right now. Why? Because when I reach it I can celebrate my achievement myself. What by eating? No by knowing I did it.

Instead I found a much better way to eat and lose weight and it's a lifestyle that makes me healthier and I would eat this way even if I wasn't losing weight. I've lost 140 pounds now following Dr. John McDougall's Weight Loss plan. He has a book I borrowed from my library but you can read all about it on his web site - there are a couple of people there who are losing large amounts of weight but most are just overweight. His book is is also for sale. http://www.amazon.com/Mcdougall-Program-Maximum-Weight-Loss/ dp/0452273803/ref=sr_1_5?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1262914548&sr=1 -5 The highest weight I know I weighed was 336 but I think I weighed a lot more, just afraid to step on the scale. I found McDougall's site after I read a book called The China Study by Dr. T. Colin Campbell who is an NIH funded nutritionist which changed my life - it's about what people eat around the world, not just China. I also found reading Dr. Kessler's book The End of Overeating was extremely helpful to see how the food products that we eat are so addicting. http://www.amazon.com/End-Overeating-Insatiable-American-App etite/dp/1605297852 This processed food is extremely addicting and makes it so difficult to lose weight so it's best just to avoid it all together which is what the McDougall diet is all about - whole foods not processed. Just like you wouldn't give a crack cocaine addict a small amount of cocaine, we can't eat processed food because it just makes us want more and we have no control. Eating healthy has allowed me to have a normal relationship with food.
Congrats on the current weight loss and I hope it's the start of more loss whether you have WLS or do it by choosing healthier foods. You will feel so much better as you lose weight.

Setting goals is a huge part of being successful! You need to know where you are going and what you want! I set all kinds of different goals, some are very short term, others long term, and most of them don't have anything to do with the scale. (usually it involves an outfit or a size I want to get into)
I started out at nearly 450 (449.6) and now I'm 196.4. It's been 4 years and some days/weeks seem to be a real struggle, it has definitely gotten MUCH easier. I do believe I've truly changed my bad habits (although they are still there under the surface) but now I deal with things much better and usually without food.
I wish you good luck and good health!
I lost my weight with Weight Watcher's & Zumba. I've lost 302 lbs. You can visit my weight loss website at www.freewebs.com/infectiouslaughter
I'll be in the Jan. 2012 issue of People Magazine's "Half Their Weight" issue!!

Sorry for the late reply....I've been off-line for almost 2 weeks so I didn't see this till now.
WELCOME to the forum.
Sometimes it's real busy here and other times real slow but you will always find good advise and support.
I wish you much success in your weight loss journey....if I could do it, so can you!
Keep posting and let us know how you are doing and feeling. Remember it's one day or even one meal at a time.....slow and steady wins the race!!!!
Best wishes
Ruth
Oh wow, a Canadian! We haven't been international since Em used to post here...she was from Australia. I'm sorry to hear of all of the distress your weight is causing you. I think that you should write down exactly all of the misery that it is causing you right at this moment and then read it whenever you think your diet is not worth the effort...and you know you will have those days!
Let us know when you reach each little goal and we'll be here to do the happy dance with ya,
Mary
Dear Linda:
I recommend that you try losing the weight by some other method than weight loss surgery. If you have it, you'll be starving yourself constantly, and that's not a healthy way to lose weight.
I lose weight by eating six meals a day, three larger, and three snacks. I eat mainly vegetarian food, and I also go to Overeaters Anonymous. I'd recommend you start attending Overeaters Anonymous, too, and see if you can work their program by the Big Book of Alcoholics Anonymous. Once you're abstinent from compulsive overeating, you'll want to eat like I do. I've lost almost ten pounds since November 18, 2009, just by eating the way I described above, going to OA, and walking regularly. I weigh 232 pounds now, and have been heavy most of my life, too. I got really heavy in the last 16 years or so, especially.
I'm five foot 1/2 inch tall, and should weigh 110 pounds, so I'm really morbidly obese right now. I know you're in a hurry, but if you lose weight slower by the way I described, you won't be starving yourself, at least.
Take care,
