Anyone watching The Biggest Loser this season?
What's with Daniel....any thoughts on why he isn't losing?  We think he's sneaking food.  Hopefully it's not a serious medical issue or anything.
And how about Tracy........man she makes me ill!!

I think this show is great to get people motivated to MOVE and eat the right amount of calories but I fear it sets up an unrealistic expectation for most people..........I don't think we can or should expect to lose weight at the fast rate they do on the ranch. 

What do you think of the show?

I agree with you Ruth. It sets up unrealistic expectations. With Daniel..i think he is sneaking food too. I was in tears when Abby would talk about her family. It is a good motivation tool but it just makes me want to have all day and all the resources they have to work out and eat right..

I know what you mean about Abbey.  Man there were a lot of tears shed on the show last nite.

It seems like she resolved much more than just her weight issues.  Happy for her.
Already looking forward to next weeks show. The teaser makes me think Tracy may finally "get hers".  I'm not an evil person but she is bringing out the worst in me...LOL

I watch BL sometimes. I am trying to get a handle on my body dismorphia - The ladies have lost a lot of weight and now weigh around what I do - though they have been working out and have muscles I can only vaguely remember having. I somehow still see myself the way I was at 30 - that was 25 years ago and many pounds less, pounds on, off, on, off,... on again!

I have gained 15 pounds since May when I had to change what I was eating to have my colonoscopy and haven't gotten back to any kind of normal consumption yet. I am really confused about which way to go. High protein keeps my blood sugar steady and I am not hungry but I am conflicted about the animal protein part of that. Low cal (like W.W.) does not seem all that good either since the quality of the calories doesn't much matter as long as the total is low. Then there is the whole vegan option - my sister was quite successful when she and her husband did McDougall's program a few years ago. Health-wise I think it makes sense but it is really hard to sustain in our society.

So many options and what I really need to do is just get to it and do it. Now that the rain has returned to the Northwest I just want to hunker down and read a good book.

I know what you mean about there being so many "programs" out there.
I think you may have misunderstood the WW plan.....I'd be happy to discuss it with you if you want me to PM you.  FYI - I am not pro WW nor am I against them.  

I personally believe that you can lose all your weight by following a healthy style of eating.  Something like the Mediterranean food pyramid.  That is pretty much how I've reached my goal and lost almost 165 lbs.  I decided to make healthy choices every day with each piece of food that went into my mouth. 

I look back on it now and have to say it wasn't bad.  I had plenty to eat, I ate from ALL food groups and I allowed myself 1 "free day" every week.  I made sure I had plenty of protein and most of my protein came from Whey Protein, nuts, legumes, beans, and some animal meat.  I ate lots of fresh veg and fruit (be careful with fruit....has a lot of sugar), plenty of healthy grains (fiber) and I have 2-3 spoonfuls of healthy oil every day)  I strongly believe it's just all about decisions.  If you are ready and willing to make good food decisions you can do it.

Did you track your food while changing what you eat? I think that was helping me with W.W. and Atkins, but it is one of the reasons I don't want to go back to them. I don't want to write every mouthful down. I suspect my inner child is rebelling against that audult who knows I NEED to write it all down to be accountable.

I think I know W.W. because I did it 7 years ago and lost 65 pounds. 10 years before that I did Jenny Craig and I think that really restricted calorie count did me no favors. Yes, I lost 20 pounds (back then that was all I needed to loss) but I think the frozen lean lunchs I ate on both programs are marketed as healthy but the ingredient list tells me it is manufactured "food". I won't eat them anymore.

On my currently uncontrolled eating program I have been tending toward too much sodium and today I think I will try to focus on cutting out the salt. Thar should help me walk away from packaged food I seem to crave. Maybe I really do need to go back to using FitDay everyday.

Yes I did "track" mine but I did it in my own spreadsheet/database that I build on my PC.  I'm on the PC everyday anyway so it was easy for me to do it.

I lost most of my weight by making sure I ate at least a certain amount of protein and didn't go over a certain number of calories.  I cut my calorie intake but not so drastically that I felt I was starving all the time.  If you feel real hunger all the time then you just are not eating enough.
I did a lot of research on how many calories my body needed at rest, and then reduced it by 800 so I could lose at a healthy rate.  Yeah, I'd like to have lost 100 lbs in 3 months but for me I knew it was not the healthy way to go.

Make sure you eating enough calories, moving to burn some calories and drinking plenty of water.  Keep me posted on how you are doing...

Dear Jan:

I belong to Overeaters Anonymous and follow Dr. McDougall's plan - with one difference.  I cannot stand soy milk, and it costs twice as much as regular skim milk.  I have light yogurt and skim milk, eggs once every two weeks, and a little animal meat, now and then.  I have been losing weight faster since I've done this, and I also avoid salt when I can.

I suggest you attend OA meetings to supplement your weight loss, because you will be able to make permanent changes in your attitude and your eating.  I have a conscious contact with my Higher Power (God), and He tells me what to eat, and it's really helping me.  I follow His Will all the time, for OA is a spiritual program, stressing spiritual principles and God's Guidance for you.

I know this may sound crazy, but it's the only thing that worked for me, so why not give it a try?  We've all struggled with our weight, and done many crazy things with crazy diets, and so on.  Why not try OA?

Thank you for your thoughts- I am glad OA is working for you. It would not work for me as I don't have a higher power. I am third generation agnostic and the 'trick' of using anything, such as a rock, as a higher power makes no sense to me at all. I am much more a Rational Recovery kind of girl. The power is in my own head and I just need to learn to stay focused long enough to change to patterns of the last 25 years. I know this makes me in the minority on this board but it is what it is. 

It is good to know that a modified McDoguall's plan works. I would miss eggs a lot I think.

I watch BL love it, but my problem is that they go stickly by pounds lost, i personally believe that they should do body fat analysis as well, they workout 6 + hours a day, do they really expect to NOT be gaining muscle? I just personally think they should factor in Fat and inches lost as well as total pounds. On weeks where someone only loses say 3 lb's and then in total shock and disbelief they say I worked my butt off this week I dont understand. Well they probably have built lean muscle and lost fat, so it shows a Small loss on the scale, i dont know, but it does bug me, and it bugs me that bob and jillian always looked shocked as well, they must be told to have to act that way for dramatic effect. As for Daniel, I really dont think he's sneaking food, I think the stakes are too high for him to lose his 2nd chance on the show for that. Hope he starts to show losses again on the show soon!  one other thing I have just recently learned is that for every 3 inche's lost off your body, it is equivelant to 1 pound of fat!
