Hey Marissa, you are not alone in this situation, I've been dealing with the effects of PCOS since I was in my early twenties and now I'm fifty-two.  If you want to hear what other women are going through you can go to www.soulcysters.com, they have a lot of information and a lot of advice on how to deal with the symptoms you are dealing with.

As for the hormone induced depression, I take Sam-E everyday to keep mine under control.  About ten years ago, it got so bad that I went crying to my gynocologist and he put me on Prozac for a month and it cleared it right up for a while.  He said that it's caused by your hormone fluctuations inflaming the nerve endings.  Motrin or any form of ibuprofen will relieve it temporarily because it is an anti inflammatory but you really need to do something to help you get it under control.  Once I got rid of the depression, I got my energy back.  Before that, I spent years forcing myself to do things I really didn't have the energy to do.

Has your gyno put you on birth control pills to induce a period and get you regulated.  I once went for 18 months with no period...absolutely miserable!  I wasn't able to tolerate the BCPs so the only thing that helped me get regular was the metformin and lots of weight loss.  The metformin made me stay sick to my stomach so I wasn't on it for long but it did help me lose my last forty pounds.  Prior to that, weight loss was EXTREMELY slow.

What kind of a diet are you on?  I wasn't aware that there are different kinds of diabetic diets until my niece had gestational diabetes when she was pregnant.  The majority of women with PCOS are insulin resistant and need a low carb diet.  I GAINED weight on a low fat diet so I was ecstatic when I found out what kind of diet my body needed.

Not everyone with PCOS is fat and we all don't have the same symptoms, it's a syndrome that can't be healed, you can only treat the symptoms.  Let me know if you have any more questions.  This can be dealt with, it just takes some research and diligence.  Us soulcysters have to stick together!

Marissa, I'm sorry your going through this - but you need help from your doctor just like Mary says. Don't suffer trying to go this alone.

Hi Marissa,

I would deffinately go back to the doctor.  Sounds like you need to get some things checked out.  If nothing else you will have peace of mind!   Tell them about waking up in the middle of the night not being able to breathe.    Might be either panic attacks or some other kind of medical problem.  Good luck!

Hi Marissa,
Although I don't know what PCOS is, I have been experiencing an irregular period for about a year now and then five months ago it stopped all together. Concerned, I made an appointment with a gynocologists and he told me that not having your period increases your risk for cervical cancer which has one of the top fatality rates in female cancers.   He put me on a medication that I take every three months for seven days and then I get my period the day after I take the last of the seven pills. This allows me to have my period and shed my uterine lining so that it doesn't build up and cause the aforementioned cancers.

Hope this helps a little. Please take the advice of everyone and make an urgent appointment with your GP.
