When I saw my PCP I forgot to ask what my highest weight was - next time I'll ask the medical assistant if she would go through my chart to find it. I was so horrified at the number that I have forcibly erased it from my memory. But it did shock me into starting to lose weight. Also I started Simvastatin in 2003 and it shows I lost 20 mg/dl cholesterol. The last time I had blood work prior to my most recent it was 215 mg/dl. Now since I had stopped all medication when I started my new whole food fat free vegan diet - I figured that I have dropped from what I presume was my all time high of 235 mg/dl down to 171 mg/dl which is a fabulous drop and definitely is a much more impressive loss than medication alone. My PCP was so thrilled with my progress - in other areas as well that she took down a list of books that I've read because she wants to read them to help herself and her other patients.
Now DH has been on the diet with me - he started with me on the typical Standard American Diet (SAD) and then switched to the whole vegan and he has been very successful too. His bi-pap machine pressure is now too high for him so he went to the pulmonologist to get it lowered. It was the weight loss surgeon who sent him for testing. So everyone in the office kept asking him how he was enjoying himself after WLS -and he kept having to tell them that he never had the surgery - and they were shocked that he has lost 90 pounds without surgery. Also his BP is completely normal and the oxygen saturation in his blood is now 100% - they were so impressed that they too wanted to know what he was doing. The only bad news in this is that he has to wait a couple of months to get his sleep lab test done so they can lower the pressure. Also the pulmonologist pointed out that since his pressure was extremely high he believes that they will be able to lower the pressure significantly, but that he probably will always have some sleep apnea and therefore will always need a bipap or cpap machine. Right now his is set at wind tunnel speed - the second highest setting on his machine.
It feels good to have this kind of positive feedback from professionals. DH kept laughing about how they said he couldn't have lost all that weight without surgery. I am thankful though that the surgeon sent us for sleep apnea testing - that alone was worth going to sit and listen to that WLS lecture. I am so glad that we're doing it without surgery - it truly should be the last resort.

Well we did start eating better since Thanksgiving but now I realize that while we were losing weight slowly we could do a lot better and that's when we changed to our fat free whole vegan food diet which we have been on about 3 months. Most of the weight loss has come in this three months - or so it seems since neither of us were stepping on the scale. DH refused to step on the scale so the first time he got weighed was at the pulmonologist's office where they had his original weight from when we went to see about weight loss surgery. But he knew he'd lost a lot of weight because of all the clothes sizes he out grew. He is about 40 pounds to is goal and is looking so good now. And yes, it was a huge ego boost for him. It does feel so good when you're successful.
