Hey,

I'm new.

I need to loose about half my body weight.  I have a thyroid condition and it's a weight loss burden.  I've lost the same 30 pounds over the last few years.  It just comes back on fast.

Controlling eating is not the problem for me.  I eat 2-3 low cal moderate meals a day and no snacks.  On the rare occasion I have something sweet, it's measured and controlled.  I get plenty of water...

My problem is getting off my rear, which is not apealing because I suffer from joint pain.  Ahhh, my knees.

I tried the pool thing but I hated going.  Rather work out at home.

Any low impact suggestions?

Thanks!

HI Joan!!!

I'ts hard to come up with low impact at home stuff - maybe yoga or other traditional floor exercises like push ups, leg lifts, crunches.  None of those burn calories to a large degree.

How about a stationary bike? I know my grandma would pedal her butt thru her soaps every day - about 1.5 hours most days.

Please stick around!

I also suffer from thyroid disease and had both a thyroidectomy and parathyroidectomy and went through what you're going through.  I also suffer from a bad knee and I'm having surgery on that knee soon.

In answer to your question.  I do the elliptical at the gym.  It burns lots of calories and it doesn't hurt the knees.  And if you can walk, walking on a treadmill is a whole lot easier on the joints than walking on concrete or asphalt.  Weight training for someone who has a lot of weight to lose is probably not going to show you too much by way of results.  You need to burn fat and that's where the elliptical and walking come in.  These machines have heart monitoring devices that you grip as you work out and you can determine if you are achieving fat-burning rate.  It's normally about 75% of your maximum safe exercise rate.   The home ellipticals are not as good as the ones at a gym.

I do 30 minutes on the elliptical each day in the morning.  I have that thing at 10/10 - which is the highest level of resistance and elevation.  You should start at a 1/1 and then work up over time.  In the evening after dinner, I walk for two miles in my neighborhood pushing a stroller with two toddlers which weighs about 50 pounds.

Good luck.

Yo Babs, what did the doctor say about your knee and when are you going in for surgery?  Enquiring minds want to know!

I'm having surgery tomorrow morning at Scripps La Jolla Hospital at 11 am.  I have what's known as a "blow out" of my right medial meniscus.  I've got a very big piece of cartilege lodged in my joint and so he will remove it out and put things back in place and/or fix it so it doesn't hurt anymore.  Hopefully, everything will go as planned and I'll be back to normal in a month of so.  Don't want to think what's gonna happen to my weight being off my feet and out of the gym for a month.

The Bat-Signal has gone out (or maybe that's the Babs-Signal!) and everyone's coming home for the big event.   Even the twins are spending the night with Nonna Donna.  Sophia and VInce and the grand babies are coming down tonight and will be staying through the weekend.   We crazy Italians make any excuse to have a party. . . .

Hey Joan, welcome to the non op board.  Sorry to hear about your thyroid problems.  Boy, anytime our hormones get outta whack it makes weight loss miserable, but at least getting a diagnosis is a good start to knowing what needs to be done to get you fixed.

I'm a big fan of the Biggest Loser and whenever they have a contestant with joint or back issues, they put them on a recumbant cycle for cardio.  I have one that I LOVE and it is very low impact.  The best thing about it is that you can change the resistance and it also has interval training sessions that you can program for your own level of fitness.  And with the "big butt" seat that leans, it takes all of the pressure off of your back.  I don't have joint problems, but that's the reason I got the recumbant cycle.  I don't want to develop joint issues! Cool
