Setback
I weighed myself on May 31, 2009, and I gained 2.5 pounds this past month. I think it was due to bad timing, since I had eaten a small box of candy two nights in a row before my weighing. I weighed 264 pounds, and last month was at 261.5 pounds. This was at the start of my vacation.
I was weighed at a doctor's scale last week, and weighed 259 pounds, so I know that I really lost weight from last month, even though the scale at home didn't show it at the time. I will not weigh myself again until July 1st, since if I weigh myself more than once a month, I'll start obsessing about the scale and my weight. Once on vacation, I forgot about the gain, and went on as usual, carefully watching what I ate.

well, it looks like it's going the right direction anyway now if I read it right. Hey, vacations are evil, but if it's only 2 pounds damage, good for you. I'd be thrilled with that number.

Denise,
Have you considered weighing yourself more often than once a month? I find it hard to stay on track with infrequent weigh-ins. I weigh every day now that I'm on maintenance but when I was losing weight I weighed twice a week - on Mondays and Thursdays.
I don't think this modest gain is a big setback - could be jus****er weight. Good luck with your efforts.

For me I need to weigh myself weekly.....helps keep me on track. I think if I waited a full month I would be too liberal with my daily choices thinking I could "get away" with an extra this or that. For me a weekly weigh in is an important part of my program.

Ohhhh, vacations can be dangerous LOL. Did you go anywhere exciting or was it just a staycation where you stayed home?
Why not weight once a week? You'll be more on top if there is a problem and hopefully you won't obsess about it. I agree with those that say to weigh more often than once a month because I think it keeps you mindful about the choices you're making.

As I mentioned up above, I only weigh myself once a month so I don't obsess about my weight and my eating. If I weighed myself once a week, for example, then if I didn't do well that week, then I'd just beat myself up for it. When I weigh myself once a month, I can relax and not worry about binges, mistakes, etc. so much, since I have a whole month to turn things around. I gained this time because there was no time to turn things around before I weighed myself. Next time, I'm sure I will lose weight. Next time will be on July 1st.
I belong to Overeaters Anonymous, and they were the ones who suggested I weigh myself once a month, for this very reason. Sometimes, during the month, I even forget how much I weigh, which is a blessing for me and my peace of mind. Hope that explains everything.

I can understand your frustration. Try to remove the importance of the number on the scale. The scale tends to be a powerful tool in our daily lives. I've just recently started weighing daily again. It does keep me focused, and on track because I know I'll be accountable to that number in the morning.
However, I'm really trying to detach the number on the scale from my self-worth. Its just a number, after all. Like my height or my bank account.balance I think all of us who struggle with weight-to get it off and keep it off-place a large sense of importance on that number, but what is really saying? That maybe you're retaining water? That you've been good? That you've been bad? Maybe its just a matter of fact, that its just a number. But maybe the things we do after we process the number is what prevents us from making progress or what helps move us along.
Hope you're feeling better today.

I'm one of those that has to weigh daily, I don't think I'd do very well at all if I was only weighing once a week or once a month, I'd not worry that much if I was to eat a bad thing here or there thinking I had plenty of time to do so before my next weigh in and before I know it I know my eating would be out of hand. I like knowing that when I get up the next morning all the choices I made I will be accountable for when I step on the scale for me that keeps me focused on eating healthy and exercising.

I did weigh myself on Wednesday morning of this past week, and I found I had lost 1.5 pounds already from the 2.5 I had gained. Even with being on vacation. I will wait until July 1st to weigh myself next, but this 1.5 pound weight loss was very encouraging, to say the least.
I once went (in 2001) on LA Weight Loss's diet, and they insisted on weighing me 3 times a week. While I did lose 52 pounds altogether on their plan, during the time I was on it (six months) I just about drove my husband crazy as well as myself, because I was so obsessed with losing the weight! I eventually got down to 232 pounds from 284 pounds, but I ended up gaining it all back and more because of my disease of compulsive overeating. That was the last time I lost a substantial amount of weight fast, losing around 8 to 9 pounds a month for six months.
I spent alot of money going to their weigh-ins and buying their expensive products. I can't even afford the $12.00 a week to go to Weigh****chers anymore. I am doing this by eating three moderate, measured meals a day, with nothing in between, working the program of OA, and seeing a therapist for my eating issues. Even though I am losing weight much more slowly, I find that even on those rare months where I gain, I am always able to get back to losing the next month, and I am having binges less and less.
I find that if I eat anything between my three meals, that usually leads to a binge, so by just avoiding that, and eating my three healthy meals a day, I am losing. I no longer feel I have to lose my weight fast to be successful. I can stick to my simple plan easier if I don't go on a restrictive diet like I did on LA Weight Loss or Weigh****chers. I've been on 20-25 diets (or more) during my adult lifetime, and I'm just "dieted out".
I'd like to get down to around 115 pounds eventually, but I don't think of that too often. Instead, I go for 10 pounds at a time goals over several months, and when I get down another ten pounds, I congratulate myself for doing that, and keep going, not thinking of the total amount of weight I have to lose. I do this because to think of the total amount would overwhelm me and discourage me.
