Do you snack?

In our house the most dangerous time is after supper until bedtime - major snack attacks sessions.

However since we started this diet we have not had one snack, or even felt like needing a snack. Instead I'm finding that our meal is very filling and then we both take a piece of fruit for dessert to eat while watching the news - and then we're we're finished eating. We also don't eat between meals. I know everyone is different but I find this is working very well for me.

I'm wondering if part of it is because the meals are filling (veggies have lots of fiber) or if it's because we've lost the need for lots of salt and sugar - most of our evening snacks had salt - or sugar from ice cream. I still use some salt and sugar in our meals for flavor but significantly less than normal.

I'm one of those kinds of people who isn't that hungry during the day and then I'm ravenous at night.  During my weight loss phase when I was examining my bad eating habits, I decided to lower my dinnertime to no later than 6:30 and no snacks after that.  The way I accomplish that is to get everything done in the kitchen so I don't have any reason to go back in there.  Now, I force myself to eat breakfast, lunch and a snack before dinner to keep my blood sugar level.  I'm not diabetic, but it runs in my family and I don't want to get it.  What I have a hard time with is getting in enough vegetables for the day...I'm just not that into them, but I eat way more vegetables now than I ever did before I started my diet.

Mary, I know someone else who lost weight and has kept it off by not allowing herself to eat after 6:30 - she has kept her weight off for two years and I see her regularly so I know it works.

I eat 5-6 small meals a day to keep my metabolism stoked.

Kim, I can see if you're eating that many small meals that there is no time left for snacking LOL.

My most dangerous time is after 4:00 pm til i go to sleep! Like Miz Mary sez, I am not hungry really all day long, then the sleeping monster wakes. Over the years I have tried eating substantially more ealier in the day, but it does not seem to matter.

The short answer to your basic Q is yes I snack. However i am seriously re-thinking the concept of snacking ever. What i am zeroing in on is that I need to cut cals overall, so snacking can put me over the line very quickly.

How I deal with my danger time is to wait to eat supper; like you i fill up on veggies mostly.  then i do not eat again until morning. I can barely be trusted to clean up the kitchen b/c of picking at leftovers; I usually ask DH to put food away, then I clean up.

Once i let my supper settle in & register in my brain, truly i rarely feel hunger and can usually talk myself out of any temptation. I much prefer to go to bed with a slightly empty tummy; the trick is to find that sweet spot where i have had enough food but not indulge the beast.

I had a BAD after supper snacking jones for many many years; that is a very slippery slope for me to ever trust myself. I very much respect that this is a potentially hard area to manage.

Oh yeah. I still snack - not as much, and now I try to make it veggies or fruit (frozen mixed berries with heavy cream and a little Splenda - I like it better than ice cream and it is low-carb). Sometimes I have a bowl of brussel sprouts and butter - low fat folks are probably cringing but I LIKE this stuff and it fits the program!

Neecee - all I know is when I snack in the evening, even if I'm making a good choice, there is a thin line between a smart snack and an out of control snackfest disaster. So I know exactly how you feel.

so true! 95% of what I eat is "good food".  Too much good food gets you/keeps you fat, too!
